Anyone used uncooked oat groats before? I have a 50lb bag of them in my laundry room freezer bc my rabbits love them (they only get a tbsp a week though-and since I only have two rabbits its going to be awhile before they are used up).

I've never heard of Oat groats before. How do they differ from oatmeal? I only have 5 hens so I buy a tub of old fashioned Quaker Oats and give it to them as treats.

Justino, to answer your question about how much to feed your seven chickens, here's the size bowl my five girls get cooked oatmeal from once every day:

We grow swiss chard in our sunroom, so I like to tear up a leaf or two and mix it into the warm oatmeal. It wouldn't be my first choice for breakfast, but my 3 chickens seem to love it! I give them between 1/4 and 1/2 cup of oatmeal (before it's cooked with skim milk) for the 3, not daily, but whenever it gets really cold, such as this morning (-9 degrees) Brrrr!

Oat groats are uncut oats, what they look like naturally. They are VERY hard.
YOu can google them and look at pictures though.

OMG Buff, that is the cutest picture I've ever seen!!! They look like any ole group of girls having a chat, too funny!!!! They certainly are photgenic!! We should put together a calendar!! Yours could be the January fold out, lol!!

The one on the far right, facing the camera almost looks like she's got chipmunk cheeks packed full with oatmeal hanging off her beak. I can almost hear her saying, "what??".

Great pic! Thanks for sharing.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I got home too late to make oatmeal for the chickens outside but I made a bit for Carmilla and she is LOVING it.
At first she tasted it and went back to her crumbles but then she dug into it and is still eating
