Obama Vegetable Garden

Yep! Even if it is a publicity stunt! Did they always keep a garden at their former residence, I wonder?

Yeah, I've come to accept that everything done at the white house is a publicity stunt.

And I'm just going to copy and paste what I did from the other thread on this topic.

Mrs. Obama, who said that she never had a vegetable garden before, said the idea for it came from her experiences as a working mother trying to feed her daughters, Malia and Sasha, a good diet.

So, maybe a flower garden, but not vegetables.

Edited to add: The local nursery here still doesn't have everbearing strawberries! I wants theeeeeem.

Ok this makes me sick. If they do it there is a good chance they will be fined or worse, if HIS government gets its way. In the House right now is HR 875 which will effectively ban backyard gardening, meat raising and so forth.

Check it out for yourself,

Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 (Introduced in House)[H.R.875.IH]

The Bill enter a search for HR 875 dated 01/01/2008 - 03/18/2009 you will find the entire Bill there.

Pay special attention to:

Section 3 which is the definitions portion of the bill-read in it's entirety.
section 103, 206 and 207- read in it's entirety.

Red flags I am sure there are more...........

Legally binds state agriculture depts to enforcing federal guidelines effectively taking away the states power to do anything other than being food police for the federal dept.

Effectively criminalizes organic farming but doesn't actually use the word organic.

Effects anyone growing food even if they are not selling it but consuming it.

Effects anyone producing meat of any kind including wild game.

Legislation is so broad based that every aspect of growing or producing food can be made illegal. There are no specifics which is bizarre considering how long the legislation is.

Section 103 is almost entirely about the administrative aspect of the legislation. It will allow the appointing of officials from the factory farming corporations and lobbyists and classify them as experts and allow them to determine and interpret the legislation. Who do you think they are going to side with?

Section 206 defines what will be considered a food production facility and what will be enforced up all food production facilities. The wording is so broad based that a backyard gardener could be fined and more.

Section 207 requires that the state's agriculture dept act as the food police and enforce the federal requirements. This takes away the states power and is in violation of the 10th amendment.

Section 202 reads:

SEC. 202. REGISTRATION OF FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS AND FOREIGN FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS.

(a) In General- Any food establishment or foreign food establishment engaged in manufacturing, processing, packing, or holding food for consumption in the United States shall register annually with the Administrator.

Okay, I'm certainly one to be mad at the government, but... This is the definition of "food establishment" according to this bill.

(13) FOOD ESTABLISHMENT-

(A) IN GENERAL- The term `food establishment' means a slaughterhouse (except those regulated under the Federal Meat Inspection Act or the Poultry Products Inspection Act ), factory, warehouse, or facility owned or operated by a person located in any State that processes food or a facility that holds, stores, or transports food or food ingredients.

(B) EXCLUSIONS- For the purposes of registration, the term `food establishment' does not include a food production facility as defined in paragraph (14), restaurant, other retail food establishment, nonprofit food establishment in which food is prepared for or served directly to the consumer, or fishing vessel (other than a fishing vessel engaged in processing, as that term is defined in section 123.3 of title 21, Code of Federal Regulations).

Now, I'm not an expert, but doesn't it exclude establishments that prepare or serve food directly to the customer?

No hennypenny you have to read the whole thing to find the cute little loopholes. that merely affects registration. Read the whole Bill for the small print.

It is too large to post here or I would and would highlight the portions. I have found on such topics as this and NAIS it is best to direct folks to the info, the can read and make up their own minds.

If you grow it to consume in the US it can and most likely will apply to you.

In law school we called this the "gray area from HE**"

This is not on the floor as of yet but that dingbat tried this last year and it never hit the floor. The problem I have is most of the fools listen to what someone else says and never read the things and vote it on in. So, I would prefer it die in house and never make it further.

It disturbs me that Obama obviously has no clue about what is sitting in the House of Representatives and pulls his publicity junk about gardening with junk like this sitting there to go to floor. And her...pffftttt she is going to dig for a garden...yeah sure she is. I want that on video...all of it not one shovel full sister but dig it baby. She does not have the backbone. If she likes gardening I have two 5' x 40' beds she can come weed.

Now......let me get this image in my mind.....

As a working mother, she didn't garden and grow her own food, but now, as the President's wife, she is finally going to do this?

It would have had far more impact if she had always grown their own food and just continued to do so now that she is one of the biggest public figures in America.

C'mon, folks! Wake up and smell the compost! This isn't a "good example" or "nice"~ its manipulative!

Tomorrow I'll read the rest of it. I just assumed that it was the registering issue that you find troublesome, since it's the part you quoted. It's too late to read legal stuff for me.

Also, living in organic LAND (aka, Western Washington) they'd have lots of fun enforcing it.

When I first started coming on this board, I read all about NAIS and it was easy enough to make up my mind just based on it's own web site. Blech.

I suppose I should, like, sleep now.
