Obligatory Intro Thread

Well, missy miss smarty pants, I read it... and now you get hit with Smuvers Welcome Wagon twice!!!!

:welcome:celebrate

Glad you're here !

A must have for your poultry is a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/suggestions-for-a-first-aid-kit.1150128/) and (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...essential-supplies-and-how-to-use-them.64830/)
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...-there-and-cut-more-holes-in-your-coop.47774/) Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, if you're into gardening, feel free to join this years SEED SWAP (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/seed-swap.1220129/)

:welcome

Hello from SW Idaho. Yes people do read these lol.
I very much enjoy checking out what’s going on with BYC peeps nearly every day.
So glad you get your chickens soon!
I highly recommend getting a good book about raising backyard chickens and checking out some of the articles here on BYC. :caf
That will help you prepare for your birds and gain confidence through knowledge.
Let us know what breeds you want to get and be sure to share photos when you get them!:jumpy

Howdy! Yes, people really do read these things and welcome aboard! There are a couple of threads dedicated to N. CA and the Bay Area you can check out.
Do you know what kind of chickens you want? Got the coop built? Chickens are a lot more fun than most people expect.

Nice! It’s good to know there’s a Bay Area presence on the forum. I seriously feel like an isolated case of chicken insanity when I decided I wanted them in the middle of suburbia.
Um... right now me and my husband are looking at getting a Silver-laced Wyandotte, Ameraucana/Easter Egger, and a Silkie. But we’re considering Marans and Buff Orpingtons too. Currently 5 months pregnant with our first child so looking for kid friendly breeds. :)

LOL, from your words I just got a mental image of a lunatic, laughing maniacally while running people over with their wagon emblazoned with welcoming messages.

Buff Orpingtons are pretty friendly once they are mature. Mine hasn't been the best layer, but she is an excellent therapy chicken! Chickens aren't really so much friendly as they are constantly hoping for treats. Some are bolder and less afraid of things (less chicken:D), and of the breeds you mentioned, Buff Orp is the best bet to fit the bill.

Haha, isn’t that true of all pets? I doubt most animals would display a fraction of the affection they do their owners if there wasn’t food involved.
Everything I’ve read about buff orpingtons suggests that they are basically super-chill, feathered plushies that let you love on them as much as you want.

Hello from even northerner California! Welcome to what my husband calls the crazy chicken people website, I am a newbie too but I love BYC! There’s so much info on here it’s been a huge resource for me. Good luck on your future chicken adventures!

Yeah, I lurked for a long time, reading before I decided to join. There’s a ton of information on here, some of it conflicting, but it’s definitely an invaluable resource for complete novices like me. (Still unclear on whether pressure treated wood is a good or bad choice for building coops. @_@)
