October 2016 Hatch-A-Long!!

I set these cayuga duck eggs on the 19th. Are the air spaces too small? They seem to be developing well. They're very active, moving around like crazy.

Yay for wiggly ducklings!

You know, after looking at lots of candling pics for chicken eggs, I came up with this unscientific way of thinking about it: Day 7, air cell should look like the egg is wearing a yarmulka. Day 14, a fez. By lockdown, a beret. Ducks have a longer incubation period, yes? So you would be between fez and beret. Sorry, I know that's a bit silly. Someone else can be more helpful.

Silkie eggs are set! I was prepared for six, so when I got twelve I had to try to fit them in the little incubator. Hope it will be okay. The eggs are smaller than my Red Star eggs, at least. I named the eggs all after characters from Shakespeare: Oberon, Cobweb, Peasblossom, Miranda, Caesar, Cleopatra, Charmian, Calpurnia, Marc Antony, Cassius, Romeo, and Mercutio. The names are rather random, since I have no idea the sex of the chicks to be, of course. Does anyone else name eggs? Or am I nutty?

I've had too many eggs not hatch to name them...

Those are great names! You won't know the silkies sex for a long time after they hatch anyway, so might as well name them random. I almost named mine when I saw the embryo wiggling around, but thought I'd be more upset if they didn't make it to hatch if I did.

Did you have a chance to candle them after they settled down? I just ask because if the air cells aren't in tact, it,would be a good idea to incubate them upright.
