October Hatch-A-Long

This one is trouble. Black Australorp. I just know it's a rooster. I've warned his new owner.... Lol. My first time hatching for someone else. I'm keeping about half. I think there are 16. I lost count. Too many fuzzy butts.

The 2 eggs in my 2nd phase of a staggered hatch both hatched today!

Phase 3 next week on Friday or Saturday.
I'm curious about how the chicks will look when they grow up.
I have 5 Americauna/Barred Rock (And the Americauna lays light brown eggs) The babies have BR markings, but are lighter gray. Each one a different shade of gray.
I have 2 BR/BR and they are dark. One has big feet and lots of wing feathers compared to the other. Probably a roo.
I have 2 White Rock/BR mixes. They haven't fluffed up yet, but they look silver.
All of them have spots on their heads and yellow fluffy butts.


These ones are 1 week old now. Left to Right, the 2 BR/BR and then the 2 A/BR mixes. The second from the left is the one I think is a roo.

They are so cute! How can you tell sex is it the size of the white spot or what? I don't get it.

I just got a look at myself in the mirror. Here I sit with my reading glasses on and a flashlight that straps to my head.(something DH had for work) LOL. Looks like I'm going prospecting.

Starting my first grade class' Chick Project on Monday! DMRippy's eggs should arrive today. I'll let them set and get them in the Brinsea Advance 20 incubator on Monday. I would normally do this project in the spring, but Donors Choose funded all of the (new) equipment, and I have to have it completed within 5 months... so off we go! The hovabator incubator was great with a smaller class, but with a class of 36 I need to maximize automation AND the Ovascope should also give us the best chance to see movement when we candle, plus minimize disturbance to the eggs.

The Little Farm, a fantastic teaching farm in Miami, will take our chickies once they're big enough to live on a farm. I'm so excited!!

I *think* it's Day 21 - the eggs went in on Tuesday, Sept 30 - but here I am at school with zero pips, no sounds... I candled them last week and thought I had quite a few that were ready! Is it possible that it's really only Day 20?

I set mine noon Sept. 30th, so I'm counting noon as the start of day 21.
