Hi everyone. I finally decided to hatch out eggs from my barred rock chickens. I started with three eggs. The other two hatched out with the normal black and yellow coloration. This little one just hatched it looks like it will be pure white. I can't see very much black on it at all. How is this chick going to feather out? I only have barred rocks so I was confused when this little one hatched out! Here's some photos of the parents and of the chick.

Thoughts?

I would guess your rooster and at least one hen carries recessive white and that chick happened to get a recessive white gene from both parents.
It wouldn't hard to imagine that your barred rocks had white rocks crossed in at some point.
The chick will probably just be pure white as an adult.

I was going to say pretty much the same as the moonshiner. And then I was going to say that it could be a possible sport as was mentioned by overo mare. I would love to see how they come out as adults. I do know that some breeds will come out white as chicks and grow up to be a grayish color, some will be white as chicks and white when mature, and that some will be gray as chicks and white when they mature(such as Jersey Giants. I wonder if it will be white or gray. Please keep us posted as it matures.

What are you referring to as a sport?

I am pleased that I have learned enough from following you knowledgeable people on genetics threads to have anticipated this answer before I read it. :)

A natural random mutation that made the chick white rather than mix breeding chicken to add a certain gene to a breed.(if you were asking for a specific gene, I have no idea and don’t know much about genetics.) That is my understanding of it from reading about how sports made white and blue Jersey Giants.
