Odd egg coating

Nice hard marans shell under...... what looks like shell membrane over. These girls have been laying for 8-10 weeks now.

Here's a helpful video that takes you through all the steps of an egg being made. It's likely that the last step, the cuticle formation on the shell was laid down extra thick. Hopefully, this little gal will be ironing out that particular kink as her body fine tunes the process.

Yep. Counter peristalsis. Shelled egg backed up in tract and got more membrane.
Hopefully it's a one-off glitch.

Happened again today. What is Counter peristalsis? Now that I’ve caught the pullet responsible..... she’s been off lately. Off by herself, not as flighty, cranky with others, etc. Eating normal though.

What is Counter peristalsis?

Peristalsis are the muscle contractions that move the egg down the tract.
Counter basically means movement in the opposite direction.

Shelled egg backed up in tract and got more membrane.

Is this harmful to pullet?? I’ll eat ugly eggs, just don’t want her to go through anything she doesn’t need to.

Eh.....It's not good, especially if it keeps happening and you say she's been acting off.
Hard to say why it's happening, so hard to 'fix' it.
You have other birds laying fine?
What all and how exactly are you feeding?

Everyone else is laying just fine. I feed all flock pellets, and just put 24% starter crumbles out so my broody can attempt to keep weight on.
They get 5 grain scratch each morning. Double handful split 14 ways. Free range daylight to dark.
