I have a satin silkie hen who is 10 months old. She has been laying for a few months. Her eggs were always oblong in shape, but recently they are flattened on one or both sides and they have ridges/rough areas on them. She lays several times a week, and every egg I have got from her in the last month or more has looked similar to this. They are normal size for her, and the shell is thick with normal contents. I feed Purina flock-raiser crumble and offer oyster shell separately (since I have roosters and non-layers in my flock also), as well as 5-grain scratch for treats. Any idea what could be causing this and what I can do to “fix” it?

Eggs with oblong shape are mostly produced by hens that are to fat.

Regarding the slightly corrugated area: Did you notice a change in her breathing, does she sneeze or shake her head often? How do her droppings look?

Here is some information on egg shells and forms: https://store.alltech.com/blogs/poultry/20-common-egg-shell-quality-problems-and-causes
She is a pretty small-bodied hen, not fat at all. I haven’t noticed her sneezing or shaking her head, but I will try to watch her more closely. What would that mean? I haven’t seen her poop... may have to follow her around when the weather gets nicer in a few days lol. Will check out the link. Thanks

How big are these eggs, what do they weigh?
Are they double yolkers?
Is your Silkie standard size 'small bodied' or rather a bantam?

Here is pic of her (the gray). She is a little larger than my silkie hens, but smaller than my standard hens. Was supposed to be pure silkie so I’m not sure what she is mixed with.

The egg I posted weighs 46 grams. A few of the others I have got from her lately are between 40-45 grams. No double yolks that I’ve seen.
