Hello all!

I'm a long time fan and reader on this website, but I finally had a reason to create an account to post. I have some red sex link chicks, and one is developing oddly. Both of her wings don't fold quite right... When they're at her side, the end of the wing folds on top so it kind of sticks up and out instead of tucking underneath the larger portion of the wing and being flat against her body.

Also, her baby fluff is thunning as she grows her feathers and the skin underneath is red. The others have a whitish ran skin. The chicks are three weeks old.

I've tried tucking the wings the way they should and they lay correctly, but as soon as she flaps they go wonky again. It kind of looks like her last few feathers are too big or something. I have some pics nut I still need to figure out how to post them since they're in my phone.

Anyone ever see this? Or is this just a "wait and see" moment?

Thanks!

Is it similar to the pictures on this thread?

I don't know much about weird wing feathers, but from that thread I can't see that there's any cause for alarm.
And as for the red skin, I hear that can be to do with feather growth, and possibly something such as mites - But as your other chicks are okay I don't think that's it.

I saw that thread, but it's not quite the same thing. It's not just frizzy feathers... The tip of her wing actually folds on top when it should go underneath the main part of the wing. Instead of being tight against her body, her wing tips point straight up into the air! I'll grab my laptop from work tomorrow and see if I can post a picture.

I don't know about the wing issue, but I can help with the phone issue. Well, if you have email on your phone, I use a smart phone. I always get to the share feature and then go through the email and send it to myself. Then I open the email on the computer, save it to the puter, then go through the normal post process here on byc. Good luck figuring out the wing issue, would be really cool if your little chick turned out to be a frizzle (as mentioned in the link posted by fierlin1182, they look awesome.

Just saw your new post, bummer, hope it works out and she's okay

Edit: Adding pics. They're from my cell phone right before sundown, so it might be hard to see what I'm talking about. Tomorrow I'll grab better quality snapshots! It's not exactly easy to get the girls to stand still long enough to snap a photo

This Speckled Sussex chick is 4 weeks old in this picture. Today makes 5 weeks and it looks like she's finally getting some tiny tail feathers. Does yours look anything like this...

Notice the 2 rows of secondary feathers. There should only be 1 row of those.

My 11 day old Salmon Faverolles wing is doing the exact same thing, her primaries are folding up on top instead of tucking under like her other one (and every other chicken's!). She also has very red skin..weird...overall she is doing great in all aspects, and she CAN fold it in properly, but then it slips back out. I think the red skin might just be because her down is thinning out to make room for new feathers. She does feel warmer to the touch to me, but I could be just imagining that!! I've tried doing research on this, but the only thing I really found related to waterfowl and "Angel Wing". Hopefully someone else with a little more knowledge will chime in and put us both at ease!! Cheers, Deanna

Nurse, I took some additional photos. I don't think she has the extra row of secondary feathers... but her feathers are quite large compared to her sisters.

Dancing, seems like we're in the same boat! I looked more into slipped wing/angel wing and maybe that's it. These are pets, so regardless of funky wings or not I'll be keeping her! Unless it causes other health concerns.

One of my chicks are having the same problem, she a rir, not sure if she's a mix or not. She is 4 to 5 days old. Has any one found out why their wigs are doing this? And did any of ya'lls chicks get affected by this, did it go away, if so after how long?
Here is a pic of my girl

I have a hatchery deleware chick whose wings stick out like this too. I was feeling her wing and it feels like the joint/bones are the cause because they sick out too. I guess she was just born with it?
