Do you put ACV in your water? This can react with the metal and should only be used in a plastic or ceramic waterer.

If the water fount is plastic or glass, you can put ACV in it which should help tremendously. If it is metal, try using hydrogen peroxide for disinfecting rather than bleach.

Hydrogen peroxide is a stronger oxidizer than bleach. It will oxidize bare metal into iron oxide (rust). I don't know if it will react with the zinc or not but I'd say it does.

My water or waterer doesn't stink after 3 days of use. I just rinse mine out and wipe off the dirt from the outer ring and fill her back up. Mine is plastic and I have city water. That may be the difference.
