We got a couple of chickens out of the "mixed blue" Old English Bantam bin at our local trades day. I am hoping you could help us figure out what variety they are, if they are even a variety and just not good old mutts.

They are in pretty rough shape, but hopefully we will get them looking good over the next few months. They were so thirsty and STARVING when we got them home.

Also hoping to verify that I have a cockerel and three pullets left, pretty sure the girls are girls, but a second opinion is always nice.

Cockerel #1....blue? He has a lot of red in his feathers but I am guessing that is just a sign of being a poor blue?

Pulled #1 was paired with Cockerel #1...she has a lot of red in her neck to be blue (unless again, that is just common in poor quality ones?)

Cockerel #2...I loved the colors in this guy. Thought maybe some sort of Blue Red Sport, but I don't know. Unfortunately the dogs got into the pen and he is missing.

Pullet #2...was thinking maybe self blue? She is WAYYYYY more brown that my self blue though. She is also so dainty, I love her already. She was paired with Cockerel #2 though I have no idea why.

Cockerel #3...Lemon blue? I don't know...not sure what these colors are supposed to look like at this age lol...unfortunately he is also missing from the dog getting into the quarantine pen.

And his girl...Pullet # 3...I have no idea. She is quite the bizarre color.

Unfortunately cockerel #2 and #3 are probably long gone, never to be seen again, but I thought maybe their color would shine some light on the pullet that are supposed to go with them's color. All in all I don't have any intention of hatching eggs out of any of these, just wanting eggs for eating. Only reason I even got the males was because they would not sell single pullets. I actually intended on getting rid of them (thanks dogs for helping me out, though that wasn't exactly the ideal way to go about it) anyway. You can bet the pens are now extra secure though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They look like either poor colored individuals or the result of crossbreeding colors.

The first cockerel is blue, has some other color bleeding through because he's probably a mix of colors.
The next pullet is also blue.
Cockerel #2 looks like a mix, maybe red pyle and something blue?
The next one looks self blue to me.
Cockerel #3 looks like a mixed color
The brownish pullet looks like a wheaten but may have other colors hidden in there.

That's so sad about the roos..

OEGB roos are really cool birds. I have two that are just funny little lovebugs. One recently was showcased in my DD's Kindergarten class for show n tell. He even crowed on cue!

Bad dogs!!

Those birds are really young? I'm not a pro or anything, but their tail feathers look a lot different from mine. All of my OEGB have really smooth feathers, even when they are rough and molting. Again, I'm a novice, not a chicken guru, and I could be totally wrong... but here's some pics to compare.

These are my boys are barely 2 months old. They are BB reds

And here are my girls, also BB reds

My boys look a lot different now that they are 5 months old, but I don't have a pic of them on file to post. Their tails are really full and developed now.

Your birds are really cute, no matter what color they are. The frayed tail feathers remind me a bit of seramas, though their body type is not Serama.

I'm glad the dogs won't be getting any more. They are little, but OEGB's are a neat little breed of chicken.

I figured they were probably mixed colors, though with the way he insisted certain pullets be paired with certain cockerels I didn't know if maybe he knew something I didn't and they were just in a funny feathering stage. Before now we have only ever had adult chickens that were fully adults when we got them, so I didn't know how feather color transitioned from baby fluff to adult feathers. Oh well, I will probably go ahead and find the last boy a new home. Like I say I was not looking for breeding birds or I would have gone to a show breeder, we just enjoy bantam eggs and having the girls as pets. We have the "good" chicks in the brooder and are on a waiting list from some breeders to get show quality chickens this fall.

They are supposed to be young. I don't remember what he said exactly but it was something like 8-10 weeks old? Does that seem right? You could be right about the feathering. There is a good chance that if mixed colors he also mixed breeds so they very well could not even be pure OEGBs. Thinking about it he never really actually SAID they were OEGB, I just assumed that is what they were. I could be wrong all together.

I am sick over the loss of the two boys. I really had every intention of giving them away anyway, but I never wanted them to be injured or traumatized or have a horrible death. These dogs are really on thin ice with me because earlier this week they busted into a different type of cage all together and I lost my favorite hen...not sure if the dogs got her or if she just got out and something else happened to her. We got that pen secure but never imagined them breaking into the cage these new ones are in. I am still not sure how they got the door open, but it is padlocked now, so if they get in there again they are really amazing locksmith dogs.
