My old English game bantam rooster has been trying to grow the feathers back on his tail, I suspect that they fell out because he was starting to molt. New feathers started coming in, but today when I saw him he only had a few bloody stumps left of the new feathers. I saw one of the hens pecking at his tail so I think they may have ripped off his new feathers for some reason. I have separated him for now and sprayed some Vetericyn on the broken feathers. I don't know what to do next though, should I pull the broken blood feathers to keep them from bleeding and encourage the growth of new feathers, or would that make things worse? Would it be best to just leave it be and see if it will heal? Any advice would be very helpful.

I keep some of this stuff PICK NO MORE in my animal medicine cabinet. One taste of this stuff and they dont go for seconds!
It may be carried by your feed store, but i get mine from amazon.
Your rooster will eventually grow his beautiful feathers back, and hopefully your feather picker will give up her bad habbit.

Thank you. I picked some up at the store today and put some on the feather stumps before I put him back in with the hens for the night. Hopefully it will keep them from doing any more damage. But what should I do about those stumps? Will they eventually grow a feather out of them, or will the stump eventually fall out and a new shaft will grow in its place?

Leave them be, they will be replaced.:)

Keep an eye on the damaged pin feathers. If they dessicate and become hard, then you should pull them if you want him to have a full tail. It looks as if there are enough healthy pin feathers for his tail to look okay. You may have to reapply the 'Pick No More'.

Really? Did it just lose feathers or flesh too? As long as there is healthy bloodflow in the quills like Op's bird has iv'e always had the feathers come back. Ones that lost the skin and healed stayed bald though.:idunno
they don't grow back tail feathers to my knowledge.... my neighbors rooster was attacked 2 years ago and his never grew back.

I will look out for that, if the stubs dry out then I will pull them so new feathers can grow in. I will also continue to apply the pick no more until I see improvements in his tail feathers. Once I start seeing new feathers come in I will probably still occasionally apply it until his tail is full to keep the hens from tearing it apart again. Thank you for your help.
