Moving from city to country property. Which is better chicken wire or hardware cloth to use for fencing around my coop? The chicken wire is a lot cheaper but is it as secure?

It's not even close. There are a number of predators that can tear through chicken wire, or squeeze through the openings in the mesh. Hardward cloth has saved chicken owners a lot of tears. It's more expensive than chicken wire, but it's still cheaper than replacing your flock.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Never use chicken wire on any external parts of the coop or run. Predators can rip and chew right through that stuff. I know hardware cloth is not cheap, but keeping your babies safe is priceless.

Good luck and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

X3 chicken wire, although it has chicken in it, is not good to use for securing chickens. It has big holes and isn't very strong. Hog panels and hardware cloth are a much better bet.

Depending on your community, usually you are aloud to keep 2-8 hens.

Thanks everyone. Doing a little research I found out that the number of chicken you can have in the city is 6. I am wanting to get Orpington, New Jersey giants, and americana (sp). I will also look at designs some of you have suggested.
