Alyssia waited, her patience slowly fading. She wanted to go to the caravan as soon as possible, especially because she wanted to make sure that no one had escaped when they had left them the day before. Her gaze flitted between the dragons conversing. Here and there, she caught a couple of words, but Austin had stopped translating as he was staring intently at all of them, obviously interested in what they were saying. She gave Austin a gentle whack on his shoulder, "Austin! You're supposed to be translating, remember?"
He jumped slightly at the playful nudge and then smiled apologetically, "Oh yeah, they're talking about riding arrangements for flying over to the caravan." He looked back at Alyssia, "And, mostly the arrangement is who I'm going to ride with."
Alyssia's gaze was diverted to the twins who were now bickering slightly from the looks of it. Apple had just shaken Bamboo awake and Alyssia laughed at their playfulness. She heard Austin's chuckle as well and he wore a slight grin. Looking back at the other dragons, he spoke up. Alyssia couldn't understand what he was saying, but he turned and explained to her, "I'm just suggesting that it would be fine for me to ride in Blackout's talons." He gave a smooth wink and turned back to the dragons. Alyssia wasn't sure, but she thought she blushed. Her cheeks felt like they were getting hot and she turned away to face the dragons as well.
Get ahold of yourself, Alyssia! You met him yesterday! Though, she still couldn't shake the feeling of relief she had from having another human around. Now her emotions were all mixing. Embarrassment, excitement, and relief all mushing together. She sighed and focused on her plan. Almost instantly, her excitement became her main emotion and the adrenaline began to pump once again in anticipation of what was going to happen...or what she planned to happen anyway.
Austin had been translating for Alyssia when she asked if they needed Austin. A look of amusement filled his face at the question. I wonder what they'll say. He listened to Whitestar's answer and then heard a thump behind him. The hot breath from the dragon told Austin that it was Blackout. I should've known you were in the tree. He thought, slightly annoyed with himself for letting that go. He felt the hot breath closer to his face and forced himself not to flinch.
"Do not hurt Alyssia. You hear me?" came the soft but threatening voice from Blackout. Austin kept himself stone still and let out a small chuckle and whispered back softly, "Blackout, you know me better than that."
His attention was drawn back to the conversation between the dragons and he was drawn in, completely forgetting to translate for Alyssia. He felt a playful rap on his shoulder and jumped, thinking it was Blackout trying to beat him up again. Relief swept through him as he saw the blue eyed girl as the one next to him. She reprimanded him for not translating and he acted apologetic. "Oh yeah, they're talking about flying arrangements for flying over to the caravan. And, mostly the arrangement is who I'm going to ride with." His gaze was diverted from Alyssia to the twins behind them.
His face softened at the sight of the two. They were so playful. He thought of the dragon behind him and thought back to when he first had gotten Blackout. They had played a little and it was one of the only moments that dragons had seemed a little nicer. One of the only times in his life when he questioned whether dragons deserved the treatment he was giving them. He had pushed those doubts away and kept his resolve. He chuckled a little and heard the sweet sound of laughter beside him. He looked over to see a wide smile spreading across Alyssia's face. The look was soft and sweet. He couldn't help but smile a little when he saw it.
Her innocence kept nagging at his mind and he started to feel bad about tricking her, but he shook his head. It's the only way to escape. He went back to the dragons and decided to add his two cents. "I can ride in Blackout's claws it's fine. I don't mind. I think Alyssia should ride with Whitestar." He looked over at Alyssia and winked. He grinned slightly as she blushed and turned away. Then the guilt struck again. She was very pretty. Her long dark hair not as much a mess anymore and her face was clean. Her eyes sparkled just as much as they had yesterday. He pushed the thoughts out of his mind. Remember, Austin. This girl and these dragons are just pawns to be played. Don't get attached to them. You're just using them for now. He took one last glance over at Alyssia and she almost seemed to be bouncing up and down with a smile on her face and a mischievous twinkle in her eye. What on earth could she be planning.
Whitestar could see Alyssia was growing restless, and he could relate strongly. He was anxious to get into the air and scout out the caravan, see if it was actually their ticket to breaking into the Scorpion Den.
Funny, most dragons would be trying to break out of that death pit, he thought with a small, wry smile. And yet, here we all are trying to dive straight into it.
"Alright then," he said pacing forward. "Apple, Bamboo. You two can come if you want, or stay here until we finish scouting. We should probably try to be in the Den by sundown."
He stepped up to Alyssia and knelt down to her level, holding out a talon to help boost her up between his shoulders. He'd never carried a human on his back before and he wasn't entirely sure if he was comfortable with the arrangement yet.
He could practically feel the excitement radiating off the human as she gracefully pulled herself over his scales and settled between his wings. Whitestar felt her warm, soft hands gripping the spikes along his spine, and he forced most of them to lay down as best he could so she wasn't too uncomfortable.
He cautiously stepped out into the morning sunlight, opening his wings all the way, making the teal-white scales glimmer like ice.
"Hang on," he murmured over his shoulder to Alyssia, and then with a massive flap of his wings, he launched himself into the air, clearing the tree line and tilting his wings to soar in the direction of the caravan.
Blackout clenched his jaw. "Yeah, I do know you- that's why I'm worried..." He trailed off, seeing that Austin was distracted. His eyes had fallen on the young girl, and he had a look in his eyes Blackout hadn't seen before.
He winked at the other human, and Blackout huffed. Ew.
Please tell me she doesn't fall for this... He thought. But if he could read human's expressions as well as he used to be able to, she wasn't too aware of what Austin's ulterior motives were. Honestly, Blackout understood wanting to escape if you've been taken hostage. Really though, Austin had been with the Den so long that it should strike him as ironic that he was now a prisoner of dragons, instead of vice versa.
The black dragon took a deep breath.
The rest looked like they were about to take off. As Alyssia mounted Whitestar and they took off with the Rainwing twins following close behind, he looked at Austin.
With no one else watching, he couldn't help but long for the old times. When he and Austin got along fine, and were almost friends.
When they rode together, enjoying the air in silence instead of fighting and squabbling.
Who am I if I hold a grudge like a human would?
He shrugged at the blond human.
What the heck.
"Climb on." He said quietly. He didn't look directly at the hunter, but continued.
"I'm not doing this because I feel bad, or guilty; I have nothing to feel bad for. I'm doing this because I don't want to hate you forever."
He looked up at him briefly before extending a wing so the hunter could grab and swing onto his back.
"I'm doing this because I want to, not because I have to. It's different when I'm not forced to carry you."
(Apple and Bamboo will be in the same part bc it'll be easier this time)
Apple nodded happily, her body shimmering light pink and gold. Her excitement and happiness were evident on her scales, and she wasn't one to speak loudly, but for a moment she wanted to shout for joy.
"Of course I'm coming!" She said smiling. "I can't let Alyssia be the only lady who gets to see it all!" She winked at the girl.
Bamboo grinned. "I'm coming too. I want to help!" He hopped on his talons, and Apple whopped him lightly on the head with her wing. "Don't get in the way then, alright?" She said half-jokingly.
Bamboo scoffed. "Says the one who was blind until yesterday- OKAY OUCH!"
Apple released his shoulder from the firm bite she had on it and spat. "Ick. Take a bath would you?!"
Bamboo thwapped her with his tail. "You're not blind anymore so I can hit you. And no I will
not bathe, if it keeps you from chomping on me!"
Apple tried to keep a straight face, but she burst out laughing as they all took flight and began heading for the caravans. She glanced back and saw Blackout and Austin holding back for a moment, but continued.
Whatever is going on there, it's for them to get through.
