Blackout clenched his jaw. "Yeah, I do know you- that's why I'm worried..." He trailed off, seeing that Austin was distracted. His eyes had fallen on the young girl, and he had a look in his eyes Blackout hadn't seen before.
He winked at the other human, and Blackout huffed. Ew.
Please tell me she doesn't fall for this... He thought. But if he could read human's expressions as well as he used to be able to, she wasn't too aware of what Austin's ulterior motives were. Honestly, Blackout understood wanting to escape if you've been taken hostage. Really though, Austin had been with the Den so long that it should strike him as ironic that he was now a prisoner of dragons, instead of vice versa.
The black dragon took a deep breath.
The rest looked like they were about to take off. As Alyssia mounted Whitestar and they took off with the Rainwing twins following close behind, he looked at Austin.
With no one else watching, he couldn't help but long for the old times. When he and Austin got along fine, and were almost friends.
When they rode together, enjoying the air in silence instead of fighting and squabbling.
Who am I if I hold a grudge like a human would?
He shrugged at the blond human.
What the heck.
"Climb on." He said quietly. He didn't look directly at the hunter, but continued.
"I'm not doing this because I feel bad, or guilty; I have nothing to feel bad for. I'm doing this because I don't want to hate you forever."
He looked up at him briefly before extending a wing so the hunter could grab and swing onto his back.
"I'm doing this because I want to, not because I have to. It's different when I'm not forced to carry you."
(Apple and Bamboo will be in the same part bc it'll be easier this time)
Apple nodded happily, her body shimmering light pink and gold. Her excitement and happiness were evident on her scales, and she wasn't one to speak loudly, but for a moment she wanted to shout for joy.
"Of course I'm coming!" She said smiling. "I can't let Alyssia be the only lady who gets to see it all!" She winked at the girl.
Bamboo grinned. "I'm coming too. I want to help!" He hopped on his talons, and Apple whopped him lightly on the head with her wing. "Don't get in the way then, alright?" She said half-jokingly.
Bamboo scoffed. "Says the one who was blind until yesterday- OKAY OUCH!"
Apple released his shoulder from the firm bite she had on it and spat. "Ick. Take a bath would you?!"
Bamboo thwapped her with his tail. "You're not blind anymore so I can hit you. And no I will not bathe, if it keeps you from chomping on me!"
Apple tried to keep a straight face, but she burst out laughing as they all took flight and began heading for the caravans. She glanced back and saw Blackout and Austin holding back for a moment, but continued.
Whatever is going on there, it's for them to get through.
Austin watched in some amusement as Alyssia hesitated to get onto the ice dragon's back.
She's never done this before has she. She looked back at him, her sea blues eyes were filled with fear. His mind went back to the first time he'd flown. The same terror was in his eyes, and for a moment, he stopped pretending. He looked at her the way his teacher had looked at him. He smiled reassuringly and nodded towards Whitestar.
Go ahead, Alyssia. He's letting you. He was still slightly skeptical of the dragons, but this ice dragon seemed to be gentle with her and he worried a little less about her flying with him.
What's happening, Austin! You're starting to trust these demon lizards!? You've got to have a couple of days off when you get back to the Scorpion Den.
Austin braced himself to be roughly yanked into the air by the black dragon behind him, but to his surprise, Blackout was still on the ground and speaking to him. "Climb on. I'm not doing this because I feel bad, or guilty; I have nothng to feel bad for. I'm doing this because I don't want to hate you forever." Then Blackout's wing extended towards Austin, but instead of swinging up like he always had, Austin hesitated.
"I'm doing this because I want to, not because I have to. It's different when I'm not being forced to carry you," Blackout said looking at Austin a little. Austin's eyebrow went up skeptically. He didn't expect this from the nightwing in front of him.
He chuckled slightly, reaching up for the wing to throw himself onto the back of the dragon like he had done so many times before. "And, I'm doing this because it's how it's supposed to be," he muttered in English, knowing the dragon couldn't understand. He swallowed some of the embarrassment building in him and he swung expertly onto Blackout's back, the familiarity of it coming back to him. He smiled genuinely and waited for the take off from Blackout.
Soon they were soaring through the air behind the others, but Blackout made his way to the front with Whitestar. Austin heard a faint whoop of joy in the air and he looked over to see Alyssia completely enjoying herself. He subconsciously smiled in amusement at her first time in the air. He remembered his first time again and began to relax on Blackout's back. She waved to him, excitement showing on her face. He laughed at her enthusiasm, but this wasn't his fake laugh that he had around them normally. He laughed genuinely. He was surprised at himself and then laughed again. He'd missed this feeling.
Austin, what're you doing? You can't! You have friends at the Scorpion Den. He tried to persuade himself, but he couldn't remember the last time that he'd laughed genuinely like that.
He leaned down to Blackout and called out like he would when flying with him normally, "Keep steady. I'm going to entertain Alyssia." His cocky smile returned as he let go of the spike he was holding onto and leaned back on Blackout, the wind rustling his blonde hair. He laughed at the shock in her eyes. Then his smiled widened more,
time to show her the big trick. Austin sat up, careful to keep his balance on top of the dragon. Blackout seemed to be flying steady and Austin missed having a dragon as good as he was. The steadiness was crucial to this next trick and he hoped Blackout wouldn't purposefully make him mess it up. Austin tucked his feet underneath him and began to stand up. Every muscle in his body tensed as he fought to keep his balance against the rushing wind. He reached out and lightly rested his hand against the spike closest to him. Looking over at Alyssia, he gave her a sly grin.
Austin jolted forward at the sudden drop towards the ground. He grabbed the spike tighter and rode to the ground standing up. The caravan below them lay in ruins and he scanned it for any signs of life.
