Of Feathers And Flames- A Wings of Fire AU RP

Eclipse turned away from the pair, avoiding Sol's eyes and setting her gaze to the cloudless horizon sky above the crimson sun. The sound of the wind over the dry city filled the hollow silence among them- even Shard had fallen to the dreading thoughts.
"Well," the dragonet was the first to speak. "We... can't give up now. Right?"
The Lunarwing angled her head down at Shard, sweeping her tail around to pull her closer, a wan smile playing on the edges of her face. Cool scales brushed hers, achingly familiar, wonderfully refreshing in the heat of the dying day.
A small scoff escaped Sol's throat, though not one of disdain. It was a sound of sympathetic exhaustion. His willpower had become critically infected by fear, and now he fought to our balance the emotion, to turn the scale even.
Tobias dropped his head, and Sol's gaze snapped down to the man, wings twitching.
"It doesn't matter," Sol said, lifting his eyes as a strange, hot breeze cycled through the hangar. His wings caught the wind with greed. "We didn't do this for us. Or for survival."
Tobias closed his eyes and leaned his forehead on the dragon's thatched scales. "No." He agreed, voice low and even. "We proved hope."
Sol pressed his teeth together, feeling Tobias shake.
Tobias had no incentive to leave the Scorpion Den. No reason to throw a pleasurable life away. No reason but Sol. They'd endured hard times together, surpassed a fair share of difficulties. They had survived together, as a team.
But now it was changing.
Tobias was no longer the caretaker.
And never had Sol been placed in such a crucial position.
The red dragon exhaled, breath shuddering with doubt. He glanced at Eclipse. "You turning in for the night, then?" He wondered, feeling Tobias gently pull away.

Imperial hovered, alone and powerful in the center of the sky.
The stars slowly snuck across the midnight sky, the flaming streak of a galaxy arm stretched from one horizon to the next, faded only around the territory of the largest moon.
Perception and Oracle had set long ago, leaving their superior to rule the night alone. Without the glow of the Scorpion Den lights or a veil of clouds to suppress them, the celestials shone with a haughty glory.
Whitestar stared deep into Imperial's silver and white glow, the feeling of moonshine across his parched scales gentle and soothing after the relentless abuse of the sun.
Apple, Alyssia, and Austin were asleep, safe within the cover of the jagged cliffs above. Rocks faded to sand, the ocean of dunes, the stretching neverending rolling of silver-struck grain. Despite the way the moon and stars bathed the desert in pale light, the Icewing's wintery scales still shone, out of place and cold among the cliff face.

They had been flying for two day cycles now. Austin's wound was healing well, though the thought of it only reignited Whitestar's guilt at not healing it himself from the start. It seemed strange to do it now. A full two days and then suddenly deciding to offer some drastic help. At least he could still argue that he didn't want to overuse his power.
Only for emergencies.
Whitestar sighed, slowly, stiffly rising from his place among the crags. Eclipse's voice seemed to grow more and more vivid in his mind with each hour that passed since Imperial's full. It worried him, sometimes, that maybe he was starting to lose his mind. Worry that the spells the last several days had required were actually affecting him. Worry that the heat and the scarcity of water in this tortuous place were chipping away his sanity faster than his powers could.
Or maybe he just missed her. He could always be overthinking it.
Or maybe he was underthinking it.
A faint, prolonged hiss of frustration arose in his throat, stimulated by the torrential thoughts. The flight through the desert was lasting longer than it should have. Whitestar, of course, wanted to fly as far and as fast as possible, despite the dizzying heat. He was strong enough to go on without rest- farther than possibly any other dragon on the continent that wasn't a Solarwing.
But Apple was just a Rainwing. She had never had to push herself to the limit like this. Never had to endure the relentless pounding of the sun, and the inconsistency of water between the stretches. Austin was too weak to bear the sun for so long, and Alyssia couldn't bear to watch any of the other three suffer so much. They rested often.
Too often.

Finding the cavern in the rocky desert mountains had been the only exciting development since leaving the den. It had been an obvious choice of shelter, and a relieving sign that the Kingdom of Sand was starting to fade into the tail end of the Cloud Mountains.
None of them had expected to find the leftovers of the Rebellion checkpoint inside. They were on the right track. More right than Whitestar could have ever hoped for. And now he knew which way the escaped dragons were heading.
Which way Eclipse was heading.
The cavern had presented a breach in an underwater spring, giving them not only fresh, but cool water. It provided shelter, and there were scraps of supplies.
Whitestar didn't want to leave the others. It stung- the guilt sending ripples of fear, of dread, shaking through his heart.
But the cavern was a safe place for them. For now. The desert would end soon, and they knew which way to go.
He couldn't stay in this ocean of sand any longer. He seldom admit he was leaving now out of fear. Fear for them. Fear of what would happen if the trial of the desert induced insanity, if he lost himself.

The Icewing perched motionless upon the cliff ledge, a stiff, night wind tugging at his dry, shimmering wings. His own thoughts blared loudly in his head, amplified by the deafening silence around.
Whitestar leaped, kicking off the cliff, sending stones clattering over the mountain. Cold air engulfed his body, cupping beneath the wings which scooped the midnight breeze like the thick waves of the ocean.

(AAAHHHHHH I"M SO SORRY.
I had to keep Whitestar going somehow 😭 )

"I need to get back on my sleep cycle. Staying up all day and sleeping all night is more exhausting than you think. I will have more energy to help if I stay up tonight."
Shard hopped over her tail, bounding over to Sol and gently pouncing on the Solarwing's tail.
"Sol, do you want to play with me?"
Eclipse scowled at Shard.
"Not now..."
She was pretty sure the Icewing wasn't listening, instead, crouching with her forearms leaning against the Prince's crimson tail, watching his face with large, expectant eyes.
The Lunarwing sighed again, running a talon down her snout.
"Have you... talked to Tobias? About the... plan?"

There she blows.
"Have you... talked to Tobias? About the... plan?"
Sol snorted. "Talk as we walk, hm? It's getting cold." The dragon turned, dragging his talons across the grinding cement.
Tobias took a few steps back and gathered his bad arm against his chest, then turned slowly toward the hall, boots echoing with dull noise.
Sol's eyes watched the man's every move, perhaps reading into a bout of shame. The red dragon flicked Shard's cool talons with his thick tail as he started forward, flattering at the pain in his shoulder.
"We talked about joining Helios, Tobe," Sol half-limped forward, tipping his head to side-eye the dragonet. "In the Kingdom of.. Sun."

(Insert Shard retaliation 😈-

Eclipse fell into step beside them, the pace uncomfortably slow.
Shard's dark eyes widened further, staring hard into Sol's before locking on his slithering tail again, her own twitching madly.
"The Solarwings- we could use their help," the Lunarwing added, shooting a warning look over her shoulder at Shard, though the dragonet was too focused on Sol to notice.
"After we get all of these dragons someplace safe. There are still... still a lot of dragons in the Scorpion Den and other places like it."
She glanced up for Sol's gaze.

Sol pitched his tail aside, sending the dragonet scittered across the floor, warmed by Tobias's short smile. "Right. And we'd hope to rally support-"
"And go back," Tobias finished quietly as he turned slightly on his heel. "You want to go back? With the SolarWing army?"
Breath caught in Sol's throat, and he winced as the dragonet took advantage of his hesitation. "We have a shot, Tobe."
"We do." Tobias nodded, falling back a step. "But how do you lead an army,"
Sol frowned and met Eclipse's eye, leaning closer to the shining LunarWing as he cast Shard beneath a glistening arched wing. "Helios will direct us. He's gone ahead, and he'll make preparations."
