# of tomato plants

Our raised beds (we have 4, 4 x 4 beds) are about 16 inches deep. We do break up/till the soil underneath the beds for about 4 - 6 inches and add compost and rich garden soil to the beds.

so have you grown lots of tomato plants or r u a beginner? cause I have a question.
ive been growing a tomato plant it is bout 4ft but I have it indoors because it really cold where I am(been indoors most of life) and hasn't bared fruit and isn't very bushy.
Q: how do I get it to get bushier? because the way it is now if it starts fruiting im afraid its going to sag.
could really use help if you would.

Thx- a good egg

P.s this is my first time trying to grow a tomato plant. so really clueless. :)

Tomatoes are self-pollinating plants. We flick the blooms/shake the plant slightly to aid the pollination process and shortly thereafter they begin setting fruit. Also, too much nitrogen can produce lots of foliage with no fruit. As far as holding the plants up, we use old-fashioned tomato cages. The plants grow up through the cages and are sustained b the sides. Occasionally, we have to prune back and tie up areas with twine (suspended between cages) that are really full of fruit. -also fertilize them periodically with a good fertilizer that is low in nitrogen and higher in phosphorous and potassium.

What variety of tomato is it? Some small tomatoes do well in a pot but they need plenty of sun. If you are holding on to it until the warmer weather comes you might want to keep it topped off. (pruning the top branches) You really don't want it to bush out until it is able to get full sun. Just a question... why are you growing it now before the last frost? I would recommend starting plants about a month before the last frost, your seedlings should be tall and have strong roots in that 1 month then cut off everything that is growing in the bottom 6 to 8 inches from the root ball then plant it deep (bury the first 6 to 8 inches of the plant) all those little fuzzy hairs that are on the stalk will become roots and your plant will have an amazing root system.

well I started growing it when it was still warm (outside) then brought into my polebarn(with a hang light above it) then started to get super cold so brought in house again with hanging light. I turn on light in morning then turn it off at bout 7:30pm and water it every morning unless still really damp.so I have a stystem and its been growing tall just worried about round ness
I grew it from a seed the pack says"fireball" full sized fruits, early variety ( it was the only pack of seed otherwize I know I should have done cherry tomatoes)
since it has a hanging light is that enough light for it to bush out? and at the top two more branching are growing, should I still cut them off? and how much should I prune off?
sry for being a pain,
Thx for answering,
A good egg :)

How tall will the plant get? (should have a size on the package) If it at the height that you want then you can prune the tops, as long as there is growth on the lower part of the plant. More leaves catch more light... After pruning the tops, this should force lower branches to start growing.

Read #5, but don't cut anything from the lower plant after you reach the height you want..
