Hello everyone,
i got a question to ask about raising chickens off gird with no power.

okay right now my family is looking at getting some land, now it has no power, its really off gird lol. but am thinking of maybe raising some meat birds during the summer on it, so am wondering how would one go about that? like raising chicks with no heat lamps? is it possible?

now am thinking of using a mobile chicken tractor for them, how many acres would one have to have to keep them happy/ have a nice amount of forage per year. (just curious land is 160 acres)

also to note is the predator situation.
now this land is full of them, been told, lots of bear, wolves, coyotes, fisher.
and in the area there are, lynx, weasel, mink, marten. also was told a few years ago there was a mountain lion in the area and a few wolverine have been trapped in this area.

For day to day chicken keeping there is no need for electricity. Young chicks would need warmth until feathered and you could accomplish this with a broody.

You ask how many acres you need, but didn't mention how many chickens you intend to raise. So it's hard to say.

A mobile chicken tractor would be less secure than a fully fenced run. You could look into movable solar electric poultry netting.

sorry,

i am not sure how many i would have. guess it depends but maybe 50-100 lets say.

Where in Canada?....climates vary wildly across that country.
Keeping liquid water available in winter would be a challenge,
and heating young chicks even more so.

Imo 50-100 chickens is more than a backyard effort. You would be better to contact your local agriculture extension agent in your area or whatever it is called in Canada rather than seek advice here.

forget to mention these would be meat birds, so i would only have them during the summer.

in my province am allowed 299 egg layers and 999 meat birds. before buying into that quota system.

these would be meat birds so am pretty low on the amount i can have lol.

If you have no electricity, how would you keep them once processed?
good question, this land is kinda just to have for hunting. but i thought it might be a good idea to raise some meat chickens during the summer on it.

i don't plan to live on it. i camp near the land lol. so i have power where i live.

We build our coop before our house is finished, so there is no electricity nor water on the property.

We have a rain barrel system set up, with gutters on our coop. And a solar powered exhaust fan and interior light. We also have a timer on our automatic door (we're still in the process of training them to go in at bedtime).
