Off-Grid Coop

Very sweet coop! It's nice to see someone who's willing to take good care of their birds. Good luck with your flock. May the coons, weasels, foxes and hawks never find it.

I am at 6,000 feet in Montana without power in my coop for over 2 years.

I found the secrets to success were insulate well, watch your drafts and yes ventilate! Sort of a hard mix to master when you can go for a week or two and never get out of the single digits!

Calculate your space to chickens and do get the right ratio (use care on this one as you don't want to start pecking. I have never had the problem). You want to generate appropriate warmth, bot not moisture from their breath.

Low ceiling area for the winter. Keep the warmth with the chickens....

Change the water often and a larger size rubber dish takes longer to freeze.

Choose your ladies for winter heartiness. They will fare better and likely lay all winter even if it is sparsely without light or heat. My ladies keep me stocked and I have no frostbitten combs here.

Speaking for experience it can be done, and you can leave the house for work for the day.
