off-leash dogs - ways to manage the neighbors?

I totally agree... why can't people just be more responsible.

We can shoot here, in our yards if we want to, target practice, stray dogs, whatever. I hear guns every couple nights. More so during hunting season.

If you are going to shoot we do adhere to rather strict gun safety rules. Don't get me wrong, you shoot someone on accident and it will be your @#$. But, if you want to set up a target range in your backyard, go for it.

As I watched the Akita leave the driveway ahead of me with no one calling it back I seriously considered going home and firing a couple rounds in the air jut to drive the point home....

My neighbors shoot on occassion and to be perfectly honest I don't know what, if anything, they were shooting at. Never asked.

I know some of the neighbors set live traps in their yards and "relocate" foxes and such that are coming after their chickens but a big brown bear with cubs went through my yard not too long ago headed to the river about a mile away, the male followed a couple hours later. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if someone had shot at them. No one did, but they might next time.

Alaska is kinda weird, there are a lot of us that are tight knit, stick together, look out for each other, help out each other. Then there are a few transplants who don't get it. Don't ask me why they came here cause they hate our way of life and want us to change. I wish them Good Luck with that. We don't change easily.

It's not her responsibility to seek out anybody and tell them where their dog is. It was running stray. It went to the pound. PERIOD!! That's what happens to strays (if they're lucky). Let the owner make the effort to actually go find their dog. It's their responsibility to seek out their lost dog. It's not Red's responsibility to seek out the neighbors and wipe their butts and hold their hands.

BTW I can tell you from personal experience that the people stupid enough to let their dogs roam are also stupid enough to be in denial and think that everybody loves their darling dog as much as they do. They never believe that their dogs killed chickens, and they never believe that a chicken can be a pet or worth more than a couple of dollars. If they have a fence that their dog has escaped from 100 times, they will put it in the same fence to escape a 101st time. If the dog has slipped it's collar and run off 100 times, they will put the same collar on it so it can slip it the 101st time. Then they stand there like an idiot and say, "I really tried to keep the dog in my yard, but I just can't stop him."

If a dog owner cares so little about their dog that they let it roam and can't be bothered to look for it at the pound themselves, then they really shouldn't have a dog anyway. If the dog is taken to the pound and the owner doesn't claim it, it at least has a chance to be adopted by somebody that actually cares about it.

If you had read the OP's message, it was stated that an unleashed dog walking With his owner jumped over another person's fence and killed the duck. If they were strays, there wouldn't be any "owners" to go looking for them at the pound. If you have a problem with a neighbor why not talk to him first? Isn't that why we speak a language, to communicate? I had no idea that communicating and trying to form a more positive reinforcement was "wiping their butts or holding their hands". When does anyone want to help out a neighbor this is spiteful?

If everything is shoot and kill, what do you think the angered neighbor would do back to you? Just because someone lets their dog roam free doesn't mean that they don't care about their dogs. Different places have different life styles. There is no need to be so black and white and judgmental.

And BTW, I also speak from experience. My neighbor's dog ran into my yard and killed one of my ducks. I wrote them a letter (as I was too emotional) and they patched up their fence the next day. Never had any problems since, and I can still look them in the eye.

People are aware of the leash laws in their areas. Poultry owners normally give a warning so there is communication. The dog owner can heed the warning or ignore it. Red stated to take it to the pound (not kill it) so I have no idea why you are quoting Red and me and saying "everything is shoot to kill." A dog straying from it's yard is a stray. Stray doesn't mean homeless, it means strayed. My neighbor's dog killed a chicken. I wrote them a letter, and they ignored it. They put the dogs in the same fence that they had escaped from a hundred times before. They came back and killed more. Mine weren't the only animals killed either. The idiot owners actually were still in denial. They said all sorts of stupid things. "They are really good dogs." "They love everybody." "All of the neighbors love them." "They are like kids to us." "They could never hurt anything." "All of those people are lying when they say our dogs get out and do bad things." Well, they weren't good dogs. They had gotten out, and on different occasions injured or killed chickens and other dogs (that were in their own yards). One even bit a child. The neighbors don't love them. Most would love to get rid of the menaces. Communicating with people in denial is a waste of time. Communicate once, after that bye bye doggie. If Red thinks that taking a dog to the pound is a good solution, kudos to her or anybody else that thinks they can safely handle the dog and get it there. If the owners really care about their dog, they'll look for it.

People need to realize that a dog can easily turn to it's predatory side when left to it's own devices. If somebody has a thousand acres for their dog to run on and the dog is a saint that doesn't harrass wildlife or ever leave the 1000 acres, that's great. But if Rover leaves the 1000 acres and goes on somebody else's property, that property owner gets to make the rules.

In all honestly, most people on this board don't shoot or take to the pound dogs that have accidentally escaped their yard one time and are not hurting anything while innocently and aimlessy wandering. The harsher treatment is for the repeat offenders or dogs that are menacing other animals or people.

I'm trying to understand why you do everything in secret. If you are doing something that you Know is your right and honestly, why do you have to sneak around and do stuff? Sneaking doesn't show honest actions..

Who said i was striving to be honest??
