off-leash dogs - ways to manage the neighbors?

I'm trying to understand why you do everything in secret. If you are doing something that you Know is your right and honestly, why do you have to sneak around and do stuff? Sneaking doesn't show honest actions.

What is the harm in informing the owner of their own pets actions? Inform them and inform the animal control. If anything happens, then the owners of the dogs can't deny not knowing. Once they have been informed and their dogs are still a pest then take care of them.

I think HighCountryChicken's solution is very good. Make them pay for their dog's actions and let them know that you are willing to solve your problem with a gun if you need to.... but inform them first. Give them a benefit of the doubt that it was a mistake on their part and let them correct it.

It's not her responsibility to seek out anybody and tell them where their dog is. It was running stray. It went to the pound. PERIOD!! That's what happens to strays (if they're lucky). Let the owner make the effort to actually go find their dog. It's their responsibility to seek out their lost dog. It's not Red's responsibility to seek out the neighbors and wipe their butts and hold their hands.

BTW I can tell you from personal experience that the people stupid enough to let their dogs roam are also stupid enough to be in denial and think that everybody loves their darling dog as much as they do. They never believe that their dogs killed chickens, and they never believe that a chicken can be a pet or worth more than a couple of dollars. If they have a fence that their dog has escaped from 100 times, they will put it in the same fence to escape a 101st time. If the dog has slipped it's collar and run off 100 times, they will put the same collar on it so it can slip it the 101st time. Then they stand there like an idiot and say, "I really tried to keep the dog in my yard, but I just can't stop him."

If a dog owner cares so little about their dog that they let it roam and can't be bothered to look for it at the pound themselves, then they really shouldn't have a dog anyway. If the dog is taken to the pound and the owner doesn't claim it, it at least has a chance to be adopted by somebody that actually cares about it.

If you had read the OP's message, it was stated that an unleashed dog walking With his owner jumped over another person's fence and killed the duck. If they were strays, there wouldn't be any "owners" to go looking for them at the pound. If you have a problem with a neighbor why not talk to him first? Isn't that why we speak a language, to communicate? I had no idea that communicating and trying to form a more positive reinforcement was "wiping their butts or holding their hands". When does anyone want to help out a neighbor this is spiteful?

If everything is shoot and kill, what do you think the angered neighbor would do back to you? Just because someone lets their dog roam free doesn't mean that they don't care about their dogs. Different places have different life styles. There is no need to be so black and white and judgmental.

And BTW, I also speak from experience. My neighbor's dog ran into my yard and killed one of my ducks. I wrote them a letter (as I was too emotional) and they patched up their fence the next day. Never had any problems since, and I can still look them in the eye.

Really, you let your dogs roam free? You dont care if they go into other peoples yards? Then dont cry when your dog dosent come home...I dont have to find a dogs owner that LETS his dogs roam free...because they must not care too much about the dogs to let them roam free. I wouldnt waste my time/energy finding that idiot owner. IMO
Now..if the dogs get out on accident and its not a regular thing..and hte owners actually CARE where the dogs are...then i'd tell the owners..because the dogs got out on accident. Thats differant IMO

Its the owner's fault if the dog is always out not the dogs they don't know they are not supposed to be out because the owners don't do anything about it, so you shouldn't shoot and kill a dog take it to a local humane society.

I agree with you there Em.. most dogs act the way they do because of what their owners do or don't teach them. It's a shame that the dogs get the punishment for their owners.

This is what some just can't fathom - and so they determine you an irresponsible pet owner. My neigbors and I all free roam our dogs because we all agree on it. Of course we wouldn't do it if we had a neighbor who disapproved but we have none of those .... You won't make the others understand that either...I tried

Thanks for the translation.

A couple weeks ago my newest neighbor had a really cool party, bonfire, acrobats, fire juggling. It was COOOLLLL!!!!

BUT, they all brought their dogs and nobody was watching the dogs. My dogs went ballistic and I looked out to see 2 husky mixes eyeing my goat pen (the chickens were in for the night)

I stepped out on the front porch and say get home and they trotted off so I grabbed my bike and went to meet the neighbors (in my jammies and bare feet). So I followed the dogs (who were not in the least bit aggressive) down to the party, asked who was in charge cause I had never met this neighbor. Some guy (not the neighbor) offered me a bear and a chair and I calmly explained that I had goats and chickens and this was the one and only warning that loose dogs will be shot.

Now a couple other people came over but none of them seemed to be taking anything very seroius. There were over a dozen big dogs roaming loose and leaving the property as I was speaking and not a single person called any one of them.

The neighbor finally came forward apologizing for the noise and looking a little chagrined about the party, I told the crowd now forming around me that "the party was awesome, I hoped I'd be invited to next years, Kudos for outstanding party throwing (everyone laughed) but 3 weeks ago 7 baby goats were ripped apart not 1/2 a mile from here (instant silence) and all of the homes along this stretch that have goats are a little touchy about dogs right now. I have dogs, big dogs, but my dogs are not allowed to leave my yard. If another dog comes onto my property tonight I will shoot it. After shawn had to come home to dead babies and does that needed to be put down later due to thier injuries, he won't be coming over to see you first. The party is cool, the dogs are not! Keep them here or take them home."

They assured me the dogs would be kept on the property but an Akita mix jogged down the driveway ahead of me and wandered off (not in the direction of my house) but an hour or so later the dogs went off again and I ran out the front door, no dogs in sight but I could hear someone whistling for a dog on the street (my driveway is really long, can't see the street from the house)

Some people just don't get it. I don't care if your dog roams all over your property, but keep him off of mine. Besides the goats and chickens my dogs will attack any "intruders" 4 legs or 2 legs. Unless I am there telling them not to, they protect first ask questions later.

Wow, that's really sad what happened to those baby goats.

How is it in Alaska, tight knit community? Would it cause a lot of revolt if you shot your gun in the air when you saw a dog at night? I'm saying this because you mentioned that you heard the owner whistling, so he obviously wants his dog to stay off of your property. But maybe a stronger message? I would be freaked out if I heard a gun shot and couldn't see my dog... make me think twice.

But that sounds like one Killer of a party. Acrobats, fire juggling, bonfire. Sounds like crazy fun.
