Because it gets them out of the house and working at 12. Also means that it's one less kid to find someone to watch during the day. It's a horrible, awful job, but it pays VERY well all in all.
 
Actually, he's rouging right now - removing rouge corn that decreases yield. Detassling doesn't start until July.

I suspect because corn is wind pollenated, so you remove tassels to keep your seed stock pure (an especial concern because of monsato's seed police who are suing when thier gmo corn pollutes your corn as IP theft),
 
Oh and good morning, racking 30lbs of lavender peacock bars today (wedding orders) so i'll be back and forth.
 
Well how is my corn supposed to grow if I de-tassel it? Whats going to land on the silks? If you ask me, monsanto should detassel their schmidt and leave the good stuff alone....
