Belle I have more bunny questions!

Yesterday we talked about how old they produce....what about an older doe who has never been bred? Any luck with those? My Tribble is over a year old, never been bred and OBESE. I bred her without even thinking about it and now have been told she will not get pregnant or be successful.

Ever have any luck with those does?

And how early do you breed your does and bucks? Other breeder lady said 16 weeks on bucks and 5 months on does, is her earliest.

I think the obesity would be more of a problem than the age. 1 year old isn't old at all for a first litter. Have you put her on a diet? When I think there might be fertility problems, I often let them share a cage for a month, then I remove the buck and give her a nest for a month and cross my fingers. Even though rabbits are induced ovulaters, they still have a heat cycle and I figure if I let them shack up for a bit, they're more likely to hit the right time. I consider it a modified "colony." In Tribble's case, there would be the added benefit on the constant excercise of him chasing her around the pen - although you might want to wait until it's not a million degrees outside or you'll give them both heat stroke. I wouldn't give up on a doe until I'd tried everything.

Bucks often have lower fertility in the heat of summer anyway. I've never noticed a big problem, but a lot of folks used to say these high temps kill the sperm and it takes a while for them to recover.

I usually start breeding does between 6-8 months, but I know other people that start at 5 months without issues. I'm not in a huge hurry at this point in my life, I only breed 2 litters a year from each doe. I'm still working on improving my own lines and I sell all my culls as pets for cheap. Four months is about right on the bucks, they're usually pretty rowdy by then anyway.

No, could you post a link? We have been putting fruit and and veges in the front yard as out back is mostly trees and ponds, then bayou. Have had some questions from neighbors (like hey is that kale?) but no complaints yet. The sweet potatoes are slowly taking over the yard and they look a heck of a lot better than the dead brown grass.

Thank you sparkles. What a load of crap uh dog dookie. The reality of today is that our food is being poisoned by our own government. Diabetes and obesity are running rampant rampant across the nation, and really all of us should be planting food gardens (even in the front yard). As people concerned for our health and that of our children it IS time to let the government know they have gone too far. We pay their salary and perks and they use the power of the bureaucracy against us. Getting off my soap box now.

ok hold the presses.... i'm using the LORE section for the first time ever
