I just want to meet the reindeer.

mama never told me I couldn't bring home a wittle raptor.

....so here's today's story....goin to drop of Zoe at horse camp, there's a juvy hawk in the middle of the road at the turn...gettin dive bombed by wittle birdies and not goin anywhere....car turns ahead of me--we're both turning same way...in a row...I notice hawk hops to tall grass. huh? They don't do that. Why didn't it fly away?

Borrow a bunny cage from horse camp...go back to intersection...now hawk is on opposite side of the road and lil birds still dive bombing it...I slow down....it hops back in tall grass on that side of the road....I put on hazards...inform Ava to stay in car...hope the 2 big dogs don't get overly anxious at watching me try to capture a hawk and hope they don't lunge and try to bite it's head off when I open the hatch to put it in the bunny cage....exit car with my winter coat ( I know...weird weather...unseasonably hot to cold...) and the lil fella looks at me and says "aaaaaaw" but in that scary hawk voice...and I talk softly to it...so it hops into the soybean feild so I chase it and it goes back into the tall grass where I am able to capture it.

I put in the cage...old man stops...so friendly these people out in the middle of no where to see if I stalled and need help...I tell him I captured a hawk that's injured and taking it to a rehab place...and he said, "I like meeting people like you."

So now I have hawk...go back up road to horse camp to do a quick show and tell and to tell them not to pet it or it'll break your fingers off....call Hoo Haven...our local rehabber who took my pinky squirrels this past spring....no answer but message that says they are filled to max and she will call back to inform anyone who needs help on what to do....seems there is a lack of rehabbers here...I think I found my calling...I think I'm going to be a rehabber.

What? Ok, as long as Kathy from Hoo Haven talks me through things...I'm pretty sure I can do it.

I'm home...hawk is in my garage "aaaaw"ing at my cat, Petey ****Look DAC**** Petey says, what the heck? I want to sniff until it does that scary thing at me and raises it's wings....so Petey got bored and ran in the house instead...ding dong outdoor cat. I called my photography teacher cuz I thought he might know of someone and he's got a lead from his country vet but waiting on what's next.

In the mean time...I got me a raptor. "I'm gettin nuttin for Christmas. Mommy and daddy are mad. I'm gettin nuttin for Christmas..cuz i ain't been nuttin but bad."

kids at camp have named our raptor "Hunter" ...although my suggestion was "Hungry" for Hungry Run Stables. ha ha ha...but the girls said, "ew."

check with DNR or fish and game (whatever it's called in your state about the steps to become "official") make sure you get 503 status (non profit) done before the holidays, so you can take donations for feed and such. I think you'd do well at it, but you know me i'm the paperwork nut.

When I was a kid we had barn owls in one of our barns. They were on what was left of the haymow, and once they got to the age of almost learning to fly they started lead-ballooning it off of the shelf and down the 25 ft to the barn floor. Well, we were worried that the dogs would get them, so first my dad tried putting them BACK, which required a loooong ladder and some heavy-duty snowmobile gloves.... but they wouldnt stay. The parent's appeared to have abandoned them, because we did what the game warden said and left them alone for a couple of days, but they just sat in the middle of our yard and cried and never got fed. So we had game and fish come get them, but they died at the rehab place... but game and fish felt so bad that they brought us 2 older babies that they were trying to rehome and put them in our barn. We also got a really nice private field trip of the rehab facility. Sad for the babies that died but it ended happily for those older babies who LOVED our barn and stayed there for years.

Come on along, I'll take you right over.

Some jerks burned down one of the Amish people's barns outside of town this week. 3 cows perished in the fire. They don't bother anyone, and they are always so friendly, and they make AMAZING food.... and basically, they just aren't intrusive to us so why oh why are there morons out there who have to do such hateful things like that!?
