Hey, your turkey beak story (ouch) reminded me that I wanted to ask you guys this - how the heck do you think one of my hens is losing her toenails? She lost the tip of one toe earlier this spring, and now I've noticed that she's broken off three of her other toenails, right down to the toe. Neither of the other two is having any issues with this and they all travel the yard together. Weird, right?

I have hens that do that all the time. I have some with shortened toes. One I remember getting caught in a gate, the other I stepped on, some I think just scratch at concrete too much.

Others, well, chickens are stupid animals.

Well they are. Turkeys are freak shows. They are smarter, but have a longer period of "infant idiocy" as a result.

It is not that they are fragile, it is that they are curious and prone to putting themselves in dumb positions. Combine that with an extreme "flight" reaction with the "fight or flight" reaction, and you have a recipe for disaster.

You should see the splat mark on the wall from the poult that broke off her beak. Horrifying.

I have a dozen eggs coming, which leaves 30 open slots in the turner... seems a shame to run a whole bator when only part of it is full

I read that as Mr. Saddi brought hom a 10lb bag of RICE, and I was wondering how on earth you got your kids to drink RICE SLUSHIES.

Rice is picked up in 25lb bags, and we go thru a bag a month. the older boy is allergic to EVERYthing, wheat to pine, rice is one of his few safe food, so the rice maker goes almost nonstop, and onigiri (rice balls with sesame seed sprinkles) is his favorite food.
