Never tried Welp before. Will consider them. We've used McMurray for the laying flock before and just had good luck with them. Lay like fools, sturdy chicks, all kinds of good points.
I'm contemplating selling off my sussex. I've had nothing but problems with them! I have 8 hens and not one egg in two days! One is broody and one has a gimpy leg that for the life of me I cant figure out whats wrong or what happened to her (no break, no sore, no noticeable swelling etc) she just a gimpy! So whats up with the other six? Stupid hens. At this point I might give'em away. That is all except for gimpy.
I will never get Sussex of Welsummers again. They are too fragile. The sussex are poor layers, all of them, and the Wellies all have eye issues that none of my other breeds have even tho they all mix together daily. the glw all end up gimping in the summer but I think its because they fly down from the bales and land too hard (15ft up) and they are so fat it's hard on their landing gear.
