Just went outside - ducks in a giant group, all chickens hiding. Hawk alert. Well apparently he got my juvenile black silkie and killed said silkies bestest friend. She was a nearly grown EE. It took me a bit to spot her body because she blended really well with all the leaves on the ground. Can't find the silkie anywhere so stupid hawk probably flew off with her. I imagine the EE came to the protection of the silkie. Those two were inseparable.
It was really funny watching them together because the silkie could walk under her and would snuggle under her at night. I have a green egg curse right now, so far since my Bubby died I have only one EE that has made it to near adulthood besides the one that just died. I got her in June or July, so she could start laying anytime now.
I am trying to get a colorful basket again. Right now I just have boring light brown eggs from my two red sexlinks. Although they are awesome ex-battery hens and do me no wrong.
Up and coming from this summer are an EE, a splash maran, a Buff Orp who just started laying yesterday and a dark red hen of some sort (maybe new hampshire) I also have a baby olive egger in the basement.
Well then on top of it all, I forgot my 13 year old dog came outside with me. She is good about staying in the yard unless she thinks you're not paying attention. So she took herself for a walk about. Sigh. She did come back on her own covered in dry leaves. I'm afraid she went and pooped in a neighbors yard and now they will hate me.
