Batz, you are hysterical! She came in a amazon.com box. I think she weighs less than a gallon of milk.
It AZ, it is illegal to pick up wild desert tortioses, because they will urinate to scare off the predator. But--that urine is all their water for the year (especially in the summer)...so if you DO pick one up and it pees, the law requires you take care of it for a year, or give it to a rescue group.
As a result, there are more desert tortoises in captivity, in people's yards, than out in the wild. The buggers will live for 100+ years, and when well-fed as a pet, breed every year. My dad had a rescue (fred) who died at 97 years old. His son (Barney) is ~45 years old, and was born in captivity. My dad inherited them both, and then inherited a WILD female rescue (betty) who is now ~20 years old. Betty produces about 5 eggs a year, although this year she had 7.
I have a Betty and Barney baby (Bam-Bam), but he's only ~4 years old. This new female, was a TOTAL random occurance, since I have never told my neighbors about my dad's little rescue pets.
