When I did maternity watch for the zoo's giraffe long ago, she liked to eat apples. bags and bags of apples. But I was warned not to let her get too close to my ponytail, lest she eat it, too. The concern was less for my welfare than the fact that eating hair was bad for a giraffe's digestion.

Despite week's of all-nighters from various volunteers, Ms Giraffe (can't remember her name right now) had her baby in the exact 15 minutes between volunteers leaving and zookeepers arriving.

Hmmm. I can remember that the daddy was Patches, but I cannot remember the momma giraffe's name....

Looks like I'll make it. I'm not one of those lucky women who have short labors, so even if I start labor tonight, I'll probably deliver sometime tomorrow (or the next day

I'm not kidding about long labor)

So throwing more chickens in with too many chickens = less chickens over time?
Could you come and explain that to DH?

When I explain the math he gets a glazed look in his eyes and tells me, "Your eyes are too big for your stomach."
At which point I either tell him that's silly, I'm never putting these birds in my belly or I ask him if that means he thinks I'm getting fat. Depends on what kind of distraction will best change the subject...

If I buy 4 to add to my 1, I can sell 3..........its like, trading a rooster for 2 pullets! See what I did there?

Can you come over and process my extra roosters? Speaking of which, how do you off your adults?

I'm not real good with processing. I offed a trio of unwanted boys before they got full grown by apologizing, wringing their necks, and then wrapping them in newspaper and shoving the entire trio in the freezer. This winter the birds at the raptor rehab center will get a snack.

My way of remembering Frightful and sharing the 'love'.

I'll laugh if this little man is born at 11:58pm tonight just to spite you.

DH knows better than to ask how many chickens I have or how many I hatched. My coop is 100 yards from the house - I never ask him for help, so he never goes down there and now that I've got a broody flock established, he will never know how many chickens I have. Mwahahahahahahaha

While visiting DH's family in IL we were asked how many chickens we had. I said 40. Nice round number....

60 is closer to the truth. And while also a round number, I liked 40 better
