Chelle, I have 2 Christmas cacti behind my desk. I sucessfully cross-polinated them last year, and am patiently awaiting the little pods to finally be ready to test for viability. Takes a whole year for the pods to mature, and I'm not even sure there's really a seed in any of them.
But I'm an optimist, so I'm cross-pollinating again this year, too....
Cross-polinating? little pods? I just keep them watered and cool and they keep living and periodically blooming.
Cna I make little cacti?
I'm weird, but if it blooms then I try to cross polinate it. The first time I cross polinated and got the little pod, I left it alone for about 6 months and then broke it open. No real seed
So I read up on them, and last year cross-pollinated every bloom. The pods are about the same color as the blooms, and form from the base of the bloom. It takes over a year for them to mature and form a viable seed. So I put on my patience and left them alone. The pods look exactly the same, except some are getting more translucent and some look... fuller or something. So I am hoping I'll get actual seeds out of them eventually.
I have a red cacti and a hot pink cacti. I'm not sure what color the babies would bloom, and will have a real test of patience as I let any baby cacti grow.
I'll post pics after I clean off my camera. Takes too dang long for 700 pics to loads every time I plug the camera into the computer....
