"A friend is someone who is special in your heart, who you can trust, and have good feelings about. I don't feel that way about your daddy but we can talk and be nice to each other."
This is the conversation I just had with my 9 year old. Did I say the right thing? I don't want to tell her I'll be friends with daddy because I'm sad and angry right now and I don't see us ever becoming friends---just getting along. I mean...right? I didn't say your dad's a rotten son of a bleep and he used to put holes in the wall and spit on me. I kept it for the children's ears, hearts, and minds...didn't I?
