poke a small hole the size of a pin at the top and a larger hole on the other end

I use a thumb tack first. Then I can make one of the tiny holes bigger, bit by bit till it gets big enough (on the less visable side) to fit a tooth pick or a skewer in there. The trick is to stab the skewer in there gently but enough to break up the yolk. Broken yolk blows out MUCH easier than whole yolk.
