Yesterday I crossed the Mackinac Bridge south into the northern Lower Peninsula in search of apples. There are several orchards south of Charlevoix, one of which sells unpasteurized cider ( the only kind worth drinking, the pasteurized stuff is like dirty apple juice) as well as hard cider. That part of Michigan is made up of great long ridges of rolling hills covered with hardwoods.
In the bright sunshine those hills were covered with fiery Fall color, flaming reds, oranges, yellows, and pinks. and while the sky clouded up as the day went on, there were still splashes of sunshine like spotlights crossing the dense forests.
I drove over a hundred and fifty miles, stopping at small orchards & farm stands, and came home with a car full of apples, pumpkins, corn, and some chocolate croissants that I found at an organic farm shop. I wish I could have taken a video to show you all what it was like. It was hard to settle on one image, but here is my second entry.
