I used to just rip the wings off of them while they were alive... they only screamed for a little while...

Come on guys, they are like lobsters. You can either throw them in the freezer for 1/2 hour so they go to sleep then throw them in the pot OR you can throw them in the pot right out of the trap. They only struggle a little and sometimes they scream, but not for long. Remember when they are bright red they are done, served with butter.
