My rooster is molting and lost all but one of his proud tail feathers! He looks so ridiculous walking around like this....but this last feather has hung on for days now.

She is rocking the punk hairdo here as the new pin feathers on her head push her remaining head feathers straight up!

I want to thank you, actually, for sharing these photos of Alice in various stages of her moult.
I am new at chicken keeping, I started my little flock in May of this year. I have to say, I would have panicked when the day comes for my girls to moult. At least now, after seeing this thread I should be prepared.

Only once i had a lavender Dutch that was a real poor thing.

This was 4-5 years ago, and therefore not allowed in the contest.

Same bird yesterday.

Alice's moult was pretty extreme this year. If I hadn't been getting info from BYC I expect I would have panicked too!

Mine just started and the coop looks like someone plucked Oreo, our Cuckoo Maran. Looks like some grabbed her by the tail......really sad looking. . Feathers everywhere!!

Will the molt have an effect on behavior and egg production?

Mine didn’t lay any eggs until after they finished molting. Eggs and Feathers are made up of protein and there is not enough to do both.
