I wanted to show off these photos, but I'm just sharing, not using them as an entry because it really doesn't have any chickens in it. But our littlest granddaughter, Kendra, was born with Spina Bifida and is very autistic and mostly non-communicative. She is the jewel in our family crown. She loved the chickens when I had them. We used to take her out in her wheelchair, I'd gather the eggs, and we'd put them in her basket on her lap, then bring them in the house. She'd giggle and say, "Eggs, eggs." Then when we'd get in the house, she got to count them (yes, she can count and even read, but she doesn't communicate) and put them in the cartons.

So one day during physical therapy here (I am her day care provider) we had her in her walker walking up and down the sidewalk by the street. As we got back to my house, she pointed at the coop and said, "Chickens, chickens". Holy smokes, she wanted to see the chickens and communicated that to us. Well, her walker is no good on uneven ground..she's not steady enough for that. So we took her as close as we could on the sidewalk in our yard, then Cindi took her out of the walker and, holding on to the waist belt on Kendra's braces, began slowly walking her to the coop. Kendra STOOD there and visited with our gentle Red Sex Link, Ida, and then I ran in and got my phone and the egg basket. This is Kendra, carrying her eggs and walking with Cindi just holding her waist belt. I always say that if every egg in that basket would have been smashed to bits, it would have been worth it!

Please enjoy Kendra's moments:
