As a new chicken mom, I've had to buy the preferred natural feed in both crumbles and pellets. Seems the pellets are never wasted, crumbles get scattered out of the pvc feeder more.

I feed Scratch and Peck. I find that they will eat everything, including the powdered part, if I wet it and feed in increments throughout the day. If I give them free choice, one will eat all the corn, and another will eat whatever she likes, leaving the rest, or tossing it out. I tried fermenting it, but that really washes the added supplements out, and they're not that into it, anyway. These days, I ferment enough for one small meal, and add it in with the wet food.

They grew up on crumbles, and when they got their first taste of the grains, they went nuts. It's a lot of work, but the "flock" currently numbers 2, so I'm ok with it! If I had more chickens, or other birds, I'd probably feed pellets and be done with it.

Choosing which feed to buy for your birds can be a complex process with many variables, and today we would like to hear your opinion on one of these. Which feed texture/size do you prefer? Vote in the poll above, and reply below if you wish with the reasoning behind your choice.

I buy pellets, Then I use the crumbly dust at the bottom of the bag to make mash. They love mash!

I use crumbles in the feeder and throw the occasional handful of pellets into the sand to give the girls something to scratch for. I do use the dust to make a wet mash which they consider a special treat!
