I watch them and then decide what fits each one, usually having a name just sort of emerge. I have an elusive Black Australorp that just didn't seem to "throw" a name at me. I wanted her name to be something that fit whether she eventually warmed up or stayed aloof. And so "Olive" seemed appropriate....she is still aloof...she is still "Olive!". 😏 :love

Some times I give them names that are the first letter of their breed, some times I give them the name of what ever pops in my head when I first see them, and some times I give them song names so I can sing to them, Sometimes they get old lady names.

Some of my current Hen names...Fancy Nancy (Frizzle NN), Assassin(silver penciled rock), Wendy (welsummer), Mel (EE/BCM), Nell (Frizzle), Windy, Sylvia,(both bantams) Lana, Lola, (both LO), Cali (California white/AC mix), Bluebelle (bluebell egger), Nova (NN), Beatrice, (blue copper maran), Regantropfen (spitzenhauben)

I love to name them silly names: Hennifer Aniston, Meryl Peep, Atilla the Hen, etc.
I like that! I haven't done quite that, but my Barred Rocks are Ricky, Lucy and Ethel. Two of my Ameraucanas are Betty and Wilma. The names seem to fit them. LOL! All the others are random names like Fluffy, Sunshine, Little Bit, Sweet Pea, Violet, Olive and Beautiful. But their names fit them too. 😁

Having only four meant they got human named… My elderly mother named two of the four.

The welsummer doesn’t shut up & doesn’t make normal chicken noises, so mom named her after my sister. “Carla”

The cream legbar is basically the exact opposite of the welsummer, she’s quiet & just does her own business. “Not-Carla”

The two polish, they’re just ridiculous … so they are Lucy (the gold laced) and Ethel (silver laced).

It’s rather amusing bc the human Carla has a 5 yo granddaughter who spends a lot of time with me, so hearing her talk to grandma Carla & Not-Carla (the chickens) provides lots of family chortles.

That's hilarious! The names, your granddaughter's chats with them, so funny. I have a Lucy and Ethel too...because one was such a noisy busybody. They are Barred Rocks and as adults look so much alike I can't tell them apart. Thanks so much for sharing!!! 😂

It is extremely rewarding to name your chickens, transforming them from just egg-laying machines to house pets.

Despite the fact that there is no shortage of human names, you might want to give your chickens a more creative name. As with people, each chicken has their own unique personality. Chickens also have fine memories. Whenever you call out their names, they will come running, particularly if it is because food is in sight.

So we would like to find out: How do you name your pet chickens?

I will be letting my husband name them if he wants to give them names. I will be the meat processor so I don't want to get attached. Well, my first hatchlings won't be processed. I named 3 of 8. I earned the right! I sweated over my first time ever incubating eggs.
