My son names our pets mostly. He typically goes with a theme. One year he chose candy names: Snickers, Butterscotch, Taffy, Cocoa, Chocolate, Oreo. Another set was based on color: Onyx, Raven, Pepper, Banana, Pyro, and the odd name based on what he was studying in history - Ming. Other times we’ve gone with water or sky names: River, Star, etc. Once we based it on size: Baby Huey & Hueytwo-y. And sometimes he likes rhymes: Louis, Huey, Dewey.

It is extremely rewarding to name your chickens, transforming them from just egg-laying machines to house pets.

Despite the fact that there is no shortage of human names, you might want to give your chickens a more creative name. As with people, each chicken has their own unique personality. Chickens also have fine memories. Whenever you call out their names, they will come running, particularly if it is because food is in sight.

My chickens have names such as chookma because we got her when she was already 18 months old and like a grandma compared to the rest of the flock. I have Barbara, named because she’s orange and it seemed like a good ranga name. Tweedle came as a pair and originally named tweedle dee and tweedle doe but my neighbors dog ate one so now the remaining one is just tweedle. McNugget, mother of breakfast and wingthing named in the food category and mowana who has a mowhawk instead of a comb on her head. My roosters are Pepi and Gary for no real reason at all.

When I built my coop, it was for only three chickens. I told my two brothers and they too wanted chickens but their wives didn't want them. My wife didn't want chickens either. So I named my three Rhode Island Reds the names of our wives, Irene, Janet and Carol. I think everyone was actually pleased with that.

there was a children's book character named Martine when I was small who was always getting into adventures, so my most adventurous hen is Martine.
We had a hen who ran off into the woods the day she arrived and came back stealing food and living in the woods. It took me 3 WEEKS to catch her, and she somehow survived out there including meeting the neighbor's dog and losing a BUNCH of feathers that day. Her name is Robin.... and in Robin-hood.
I have one 'named' Acolyte because she never instigates a bad idea, but she will follow others when they come up with some bad-move.

We have 2 female ducks... the grandkids named them when they were babies, Mimi and Donald (she kept her 'boy' name because by the time we figured it out we didn't want to change it anymore... she has NEVER answered to her name... I think she minds having a boy's name and is being passive-aggressive)
My turkey is called Tom-tom sometimes, but his name is Boom-boom. (I am in Canada), there was a famous hockey player named Boom-Boom Geoffrion who was a gentleman not a brute, but got the name as 'one boom for the sound of his stick hitting the puck and the second for the shot slamming against the boards' My turkey is a BIG boy, but a sweetheart. If you want him to come somewhere you take an empty pail and bounce it on the ground to make a Boom sound. If the pail is an offensive color like orange or blue, he will come towards the sound as fast as he can run. I make the Boom-Boom-Boom sound in 3 tap cycles and it is like a tune he will respond to. A different color pail he will still come to the sound, but not run.

(lots of other names & stories... come over for tea and I'll tell you all of them)

Usually a letter to suggest the breed: A barred Rock would start with a B. An Ameracauna would start with an A.

I name my chickens after chicken characters in children’s picture books- Henny Penny (Penny for short), Hattie (from Hattie and the Fox),Josie (Josefina and the Story Quilt, (Josie for short).

Except for our White Leghorn hen and rooster (the roo we got just today from a neighbor who decided they no longer wanted one) we went with a women-in-rock-songs theme. We have Roxanne, Layla, Amanda, Melissa, Jessica and Amy. We inherited all of the hens when we bought our current home nearly 4 months ago, and when we had all of our family members over to see the new place the Leghorn was bossing the 4 pullets around and clucking non-stop like she was incessantly complaining about something. Everyone immediately agreed that she needed to be dubbed "Karen". And appropriately, the neighbor's roo we just adopted was already named "Todd".

I got my first 3 pullets in April 2017 and named them Polly, Molly and Dolly - wonderful Black Australorps that were very forgiving while I was learning the ropes. We called their eggs Olly eggs :) Polly broke her own neck flying into one of the posts that made up their run, so in Summer 2019 we got two more Australorp pullets that I named Maisy and Daisy and they have been egg laying machines! My sweet Dolly (it’s always your favorite, isn’t it?) died this past spring - her symptoms indicated she was egg bound and my efforts to help her did not work :-(. So, I am down to three hens again and I get 1 to 3 eggs every day.
