Official BYC Poll: How do you name your pet chickens?

I have three hens and one 12 week old. One of my hens is a cream legbar and her name is chip because she looking like a chocolate chip cookie when she was little. The other two hens don’t have names because i never found one that fit them. Then my 12 week old is a buff orpington and well i named her buffy

I don't name them right away. I spend time with them and it sort of comes to me. Done that with all of my pets.

I have thought of names based on themes, tv shows I liked-from a fictional character or maybe an actual person.

In the past, I named my chicken so randomly. Bindi from Steve Irwin daughter. I thought it a cute name. Wilbur for a rooster. Rhoda/classic old fashion like name was so cute for a Rhode Island Red/Production Red.

Same! I brought home a group of 6 RIRs so they’re the “Friends” Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler and Joey (even though they’re all girls .) My three Marans came together at Halloween so they’re The Sanderson Sisters, Winifred, Mary and Sarah, from Hocus Pocus. The rest have been names at random for things they remind me of.

I tend to name my pets in themes. IE, my hermit crabs were Shakespeare characters, my platy fish were movie titles, my female bettas are mythological beings, male bettas are music-related, the guinea pigs always get big pompous aristocratic names, the cats are ridiculous strings of words, so on.

My hens are named after 80's ladies -- Yori (the RIR in my icon) was the token female character in the original Tron movie; She-Ra from the old cartoon series; Zelda from the famous Nintendo games; and Meryl Peep is of course named after Meryl Streep, who is not limited to the 80's but I couldn't resist the name.

Then there was the chick originally just called 'the white general'. He was the first chick I ever hatched myself, and he and the 'red general' were the first two to come out. They were out a couple days before the next batch of chicks and they used their size to boss around the younger ones, hence why I called them the generals.
Later, after the red general escaped the pen and got snatched up by the local hawk, there was only one General. I started calling him General Tso because he was originally intended for freezer camp, and I love American-Chinese food.
As they say, don't name an animal you intend to eat. So now I have a rooster named General Tso.

It is extremely rewarding to name your chickens, transforming them from just egg-laying machines to house pets.

Despite the fact that there is no shortage of human names, you might want to give your chickens a more creative name. As with people, each chicken has their own unique personality. Chickens also have fine memories. Whenever you call out their names, they will come running, particularly if it is because food is in sight.

My birds named themselves by their looks personalities, actions and interactions with the other birds and me. It took a period of 1 to 2 months for four of them to have names. First was pipsqueak, or Pipper for short. Next came Sweet Sue, then Brown Eyed Betty, and finally Sadie the Sidekick.

I named my button quail plant names. My favorite two girls were Fern and Ivy. I also had a Rose And an Eleanor ( from LOTR lore). My males were Willow and Ash.

I observe for a while and then pick names. Could be looks, personality, or both. Sometimes I pick themes, but the name has to fit or I change it.

There's been a change in our "system." Until this last batch of chicks (now 4 months old), we didn't name our chickens, except very rarely. I usually did name the roosters.

But this time, I have broken with tradition, or policy, and named them all. Five Dominique pullets: Thing One through Five. Sorry, can't tell them apart. But this freshman class of EEs are not like previous ones, which all looked pretty much the same to me. This time they are pretty distinctive. So the black one with copper spangles is Raven. The grey one with a darker grey head is Sooty. The grey one with reddish neck and tail feathers is Little Blue, because I have a 3-yo named Blue that looks just like her. There are two white girls with red patches named Cherry and Berry, take your pick. And two reddish girls named Emma and Rainboe. Emma has black tail feathers; Rainboe's are blue. And yes, they are named after BYC members, lol. With permission. We also have six Dominique cockerels, also four months old, I have NOT named. They are starting to get some good size to them.
