Honestly, our fences are not that great and we don't have an apron around anything. Very little hardware cloth except on windows and we free range a good portion of the day. Yet we don't suffer much from predators. I attribute the safety of our flock to the partnership we have with their Maker. You can enjoy that partnership too. Read Malachi 3:8-12 and do what it says.

The best protection of all is to raise a farm dog from the time it's a pup in the coop with your grown flock so it comes to think of your flock as it's own when it comes of age it will protect its flock ..introducing it to the flock may take a little patience but once you have succeeded it will be worth the effort

Iv'e seen/heard that a goose helps protect the flock by using its loud honking as an alarm and its territorial nature to ward off predators like hawks and foxes. Geese have excellent eyesight and are naturally vigilant, making them effective daytime guards, though they may need backup against nighttime predators like raccoons. For this to work, the goose should be raised from a young age with the other birds so it bonds with them and sees them as its flock.
