for my laying hens (11) they have a 7x10 chicken coop with a 12x74 run and a open gate alowing them to free range around the farm and neighbors houses
my 5 bantams have a 2x4 coop with a 13 x 24 covered run

  1. Inside Coop space per chicken: 3 Sq. ft. (night only)
  2. Run space per chicken: 15 Sq. ft. (As desired)
  3. Under coop: 3 Sq. ft. per (As desired)
  4. Free-range space: 5 acres total (couple hours a day until they get used to laying in the coop)
  5. Tractor: 15 Sq ft. per (when they need to range without supervision)

Open coop at 6:30 am and they go in at 8:30 pm .......looking to get an automatic door.

I got 11+, but only because I have so few chickens at the moment. At present my three chickens are sharing some 160 square feet. Usually, I'd have something like a dozen.

4' x 4' x 6' H raised coop + 4' x 6' x 6' H covered run.

Inside the coop per chicken: 4 sf (x 4' vertical), plus 2 external nesting boxes
Run space per chicken: 6 sf (x 6' vertical)
Under coop per chicken: 4 sf (x 2' vertical)
Total area per chicken: 14 sf

Coop door opens to the run 24/7. Space allocation is right on the dot per rule of thumb for 4 chickens, no room for chicken math.

My laying hens have 20 sq feet each and are managed in net fencing (1600 sq ft) and two 8X8 chicken tractors for my flock of ruffly 80 birds.
My bantams have 5 sq feet each and are kept in a large coop (128 sq ft) and get to free range in the evenings.
