why are you picking on 7L farms? They have well over 4 sq feet per bird in the coops and they said they free range. And I think when most people think of a caged bird they think of a bird in a small cage where they can't fly. I can't imagine criticizing people who have to keep their birds in a run, such as people who have chickens in their backyard (which is, by the name of this site, what it's all about....) or people who, due to predators, can't leave their chickens running all over. I really hate it when people judge.

Whats a concentrated animal farm? I live on a hundred acre farm I sell hay, eggs, veggies , quail & whatever else I can find. My birds range everyday when I'm out working which is everyday. They have been confined more than usual because half of Texas was burned from all the fires last year. Guess that's pushed alot of hawks my way.I didn't want to loose my birds to a stinking hawk. There's not much for them to forage on & I have three vegetable gardens to feed the birds greens such as Kale, Greens, Broccoli cauliflower, tops of carrots.Once the trees come back which I'm praying they come back after the worse drought we've ever had I will let them range alot more. Last year suxed fires everywhere, 6 inches of rain for the entire year, & triple digit heat for over three months I'm lucky the birds are still alive & me as well. I'm really glad my farm wasn't burned from the fires.
So. many unfortunate farmers lost everything they had worked their whole life for. They cried alot but most picked up & started over.Kinda, like the song says country boy can survive.

Right now I have 11 hens and one baby chick :) Coop is 10X10 so approx 7 sq feet per hen; the run is 200X200, minus the space for coop so about another 7 sq feet per hen. Free range is around 1/2 acre minus the patio which has a fence to keep us inside and the hen poop outside. Fence is nowhere near 100% effective on either count LOL.

Wow I just did the chicken math and it seems I am short a few chickens?

Also short on coffee this am...run is 20X20, not 200X200!

Texas got it rough last year. Here in Oklahoma it was the same temps, but we had a more rain in the fall. Besides that last year was a miserable year for farmers in the south. I'm glad to hear that those fires missed your farm! Hopefully this year will bring more rain!

Certainly shows that four square feet per bird is not the "recommended" number here on BYC. Thanks Nifty. In my opinion, if you have a chicken run, then you have a caged bird. For example, 7L Farms is really nothing more than a concentrated animal farm.

Having a Coop with a run is not a caged bird. This simply allows the birds outside space to scratch around. Some people who Breed more than 1 breed of chicken can't free range their flock. I have 8 different breeds of birds and ALL have runs outside with about 8+ sq ft per bird. I have a free range flock of about 50 RSL that runs on about 2 acres. The rest of my birds have 4+ sq ft of coop space plus outdoor runs. I cover all of my runs due to hawks. 4 sq feet is a "Rule of Thumb" number. Its all a personal opinion for someone to give them 1-100sq ft per bird. Please do not state something about someones farm that is false. There is no need to say negative things about fellow BYCers.

Exactly. My two breeds free range on alternate days, but they have plenty of room in their run, and I go out of my way to find something green to throw in on the days they're in the run. Chickweed is their favorite, and I've run out. I'm taking walks to see if my neighbors have any near the sidewalk.
In my mild climate, the chickens are in the coop to sleep and lay. Period.

well I'm not very good at math. My coop is 8x6, the outside pen is going to be 10x10. I'm going to have 10 chickens.

So... 4ft I guess?

my yard is 3 acres, so when they get free ranging time they'll have tons of space.

Well lookie here! A chicken elitist! Ya gotta love people that think.their way is the only way ....

11+ coop wise alone, run wise alone, or free range alone.
We have 30 acres that they free range on all day, everyday. (Well they seem to range on about 3-5 acres of it) :)
They are only in the coop when laying eggs or roosting.

Our brooders are full right now though with the two Mallards and 27 chicks.
