Good point! This year I'll probably be able to sell my extras since i can sex faverolles while they're still cute and passable as pets. Way cheaper to sell a chick than to grow them out, i just can't eat them they're too goofy. :)
I have given them away in the past, but this year and into the foreseeable future I will be butchering close to 100% of the extras. I am tired of giving away the feed and time I put into those cockerels only to have someone else eat them.

If I could get even 5 bucks for them I'd be much more inclined to send the nicer ones to a second chance in life, but here I'm hard pressed to even give them away. Sigh.

Lots of comments coming in. It does seem daft to be giving birds away then popping down the supermarket to buy one that was probably raised in crowded inhumane conditions. Maybe one day I might be able to get my head around butchering one of my own. Did anyone else struggle the first time or am I the only soppy git? Is it easier after the first time?

A better question would be who hasn't been a soppy git the first time or thirteen. I have to admit I was bordering on the edge of tears the first time I did it despite my best efforts to the contrary. Yes, it gets easier, but that stab of sorrow never goes away—not unless you're severely lacking in compassion. Taking a life should NEVER be enjoyable, and if it is, I really recommend checking into the psych ward.

Took me nearly four years to buck up and do my first bird.
