I use thick branches. No exposed toes when they sit down. They seem happy.

I use 1-3/4" saplings bolted together like a ladder . They are about 4" long with two vertical support members running parallel , then set the roost against the wall at a 45 degree angle I treat the roost with linseed oil once a year . When we clean the coop I can pull the roost out by removing two screws .
 
I use natural "branches" (actually trunks), of variable diameter between 3-5 inches because scrub oak and young pines are a weed on this property that have to be cut anyway while 2x4s would cost money.
And here I literally have ZERO trees. (High desert) But did go over to the shop and snag a 2x4x12 for free. LOL (SO glad I didn't have to buy one with the price of lumber these days! Not to mention I would have had to drive 50 miles one way to get it!)
