Well that comment seems unnecessarily harsh. We all have our own preferences, skill sets, financial considerations, and access to stuff.
I have ducks and use branches of various widths and mounted at different heights.
Funny thing is, I felt that @aart was actually mildly poking fun at me with her comment. I've had others tell me how my coop build seemed to look more like a surgery suite then a coop. (Giggles) I took that as compliment too fwiw...

To answer the question about the chickens posing @CraftyHen @BY Bob @Tashua
This is an extremely rare instance of them posing like that. It was the first time they ever experienced rain, and they freaked out and refused to leave the coop all day. They just stood there on the roosts pouting  Made for a nice shot though!

:gig

The first thing I read on roosts when hubby was building the coop was 2x4, narrow side up, sand down the corners. So that's what we did. I have seen my chickens settle down on it, and couldn't see their toes, so I know they're covered. Had some pretty cold mornings, including -8, and no problems with frostbitten feet.
I have the same but covered them with carpet for the winter

I caught my Pullets this morning before they jumped down.

I had my phone camera ready before opening door and turning on lights. So not exactly posing, but. GC

Branches, branches and more branches. I tried running a 2x4 flat and then on edge and I got stink eye from the gang. I took my grinder to the branches on the inside roosts to knocked off all spurs that could hurt feets. I also scrape, spray and dust when I do my housekeeping but have never had a mite problem on roosts. Def my chooks prefered sleeping and playing roosts. I also prefer the use of renewable/sustainable and free!

Not harsh, just facetious sarcasm....
...actually meant just what you're saying, that many things can work.

Wasn't about you ;)
