My coops this morning after our Vortex snow. It was 21 below zero yesterday morning, this morning 10 above feels wonderful!
I had to put up scarecrows to keep the wild birds from mobbing the chicken feed. I also put up a fake owl. I am feeding the birds elsewhere.
My Spitzhaubens are the most cold hardy. and will venture out when no one else will. My abominable chickens. The breed originated in Switzerland, and I am very pleased to have them, plan to breed more this year. Below, one of the scarecrows and the fake owl. His head moves in the breeze. So far, so good but it's only 8:30am.
Simple scarecrows hung on a coat hanger, clothes pinned on, plastic grocery bag head. Takes 5 minutes to make one.....
Below, I spread shavings over the snow to encourage them to go out.
Upcycled swingset and 5 gallon buckets, reclaimed lumber, extra cardboard for insulation to weather through our unusually cold -5 F snowpocalypse in Arkansas.
My main coop is a bit rough, lol. I got it in November as is, and haven't had any chance to fix it. I love it though, it's been great for the birds and keeps them warm and dry. I'll get more entries later, when we get fresh snow.
