It was a safe journey, though some hazzardous driving for a couple hours of the trip!
Happy to be home safe!

The eggs I had expected on Thursday, and Friday did show up ... on Saturday, when I was gone! Fortunately, my chick sitter was here, and did get the eggs. They have now been set. Dec 6 as day one for this lot, so due Dec 26. This is part 3 of another staggered hatch.
Due:
Dec 20 .... 28 French Black Copper Marans (pure Wade Jeane line)
Dec 24 .... 21 Heritage Delawares, 4 BBS Orps and 2 bonus eggs
Dec 26 .... 12 White Faced Black Spanish (LF)

Oh Kathy you have a heavy December...........

I candled my store bought eggs and it looks like only 2 out of 14 are developing, but thats still good for eggs bought from the shops

Oh my goodness...
I promise I was minding my own business, enjoying myself reading all the "faqs" and "how to's" on BYC. I am still very new to raising chickens and admittedly have much to learn.... When I found myself reading more and more of the topics on "Incubating & Hatching Eggs" in the forum. Help! I am not ready for this subject yet (big smile).

I think I've got the fever.... what do you think? It is a cold December morning and I cannot wait till the sun comes up so I can go wrap snuggly in a warm blanket, sit in my chair inside the run, talk to my ladies, and hand feed my roo, Beef Jerky. Chickens rock!

Don't give up on them so soon!

I mentioned I've candled as early as day 3 or 4...Well...I didn't say I always see something definite that early. It's just a really cool viewing time on some of them. And like I said, I don't move them when I candle. That helps me avoid knocking the little one around. You can begin to see the blood pumping and all that on some eggs this early.

But I never ever give up on an egg before day 10. Usually I'll weed out the see-through eggs at about day 14. If not then, I'll do it just before lock down. The reason is, I've marked eggs as clear or questionable in the early days only to have them hatch later and a vein in just the right position can look like a blood ring. There are chicks in my brooder I could have easily thrown out if I hadn't been careful.

Since none of the eggs smell bad, I will leave the clutch intact for another week and then candle again.

Some eggs just looked infertile, very clear with a big air bubble moving around when you tilted the eggs.

A couple others I couldn't really tell, no sign of blood vessels but kinda dark in the middle, like a mass.

I'm not holding my breath but it would be a blessing to get TWO chicks out of this, so they could keep each other company through the long cold winter

Cornychick, I am right there with you! I set on friday evening but same bator, same first time experience, same temps...soooo hopefully we will have some first time christmas magic!
Although since I am on day 3, I did candle 6 out of the 15 I set and I didn't see anything, but I basically just grabbed them and held them up to a light and since some of the time the temps have been on the lower end for a still air I guessI shouldn't be too bummed yet. I am going to wait until day 5 or even day 7 to candle them ALL and hope for something! My roo had been making 3 of my 5 girls fertile...I haven't checked my eggs in a few weeks but I hope I didn't set 15 infertile eggs! So far no bad smells or anything though so thats good. I am also having difficulty keeping my humidity up, and it has ranged from 30 to 56 so trying to get that steadied now is an issue for me to deal with to pass those days! LOL
