I'm in! I set 36 RIR and Barrred Rocks. The last time I set 36 eggs from this gentleman, I had 29 hatch. I picked them up on Friday and put them in the bator Friday evening. My kids are really excited, we love hatching.

I usually don't candle until day 10. Unless I smell something bad, or need the space in my incubator, I usually let them alone after that until day 16 or 17. I have better hatches if I don't candle often. I've been told it's okay to candle every day, but the more I disturb my hatch, the fewer I end up with on hatch day.

I candled on day 5 (natural hatch with hen) and only saw ONE definite embryo out of seven eggs

Really hope there's at least one other chick in there

One other egg MIGHT be developing but the rest are definite duds.

CRAP! are my roos gay? LOL

I candled today..Looks like 8 of the 12 are doing good so far. The other 4 I
am going to have to use a stronger light source to be able to
candle since the egg shells are a darker brown and 1 green egg.
What size light do I need to use to candle these eggs?

Okay, I'm transferring over here since it is the 'official Christmas hatch' thread. My last post was on the 'gearing up for christmas' thread. I'm happy I have 5 of my 5 porcelain d'uccle eggs developing, and 10 of the 12 mixed eggs developing. I set my d'uccle eggs 12/1 and the mixed eggs 12/2. Good luck everyone.

Don't give up on them so soon!

I mentioned I've candled as early as day 3 or 4...Well...I didn't say I always see something definite that early. It's just a really cool viewing time on some of them. And like I said, I don't move them when I candle. That helps me avoid knocking the little one around. You can begin to see the blood pumping and all that on some eggs this early.

But I never ever give up on an egg before day 10. Usually I'll weed out the see-through eggs at about day 14. If not then, I'll do it just before lock down. The reason is, I've marked eggs as clear or questionable in the early days only to have them hatch later and a vein in just the right position can look like a blood ring. There are chicks in my brooder I could have easily thrown out if I hadn't been careful.

It was a safe journey, though some hazzardous driving for a couple hours of the trip!
Happy to be home safe!

The eggs I had expected on Thursday, and Friday did show up ... on Saturday, when I was gone! Fortunately, my chick sitter was here, and did get the eggs. They have now been set. Dec 6 as day one for this lot, so due Dec 26. This is part 3 of another staggered hatch.
Due:
Dec 20 .... 28 French Black Copper Marans (pure Wade Jeane line)
Dec 24 .... 21 Heritage Delawares, 4 BBS Orps and 2 bonus eggs
Dec 26 .... 12 White Faced Black Spanish (LF)
