Official Christmas Hatch! c'mon and join

just a quick question. How long does it usually take them to get up and around? It is laying there cheeping but not getting up. Really worried because it took sooooo long. Really weak.. is this normal? It is starting to dry now. But has the umbilicus trailing along behind it and still stuck to a piece of the shell.

I'm also afraid I may have cooked the poor things. I got a digital thermometer to put in there with the other one an it is saying I am a degree higher than the other thermometer I had been using!

Edited to remove profanity, please see the rules

Chicks can be out and about within an hour, or they can struggle for a day, rest for a day, and then take a few more days to become stable. As the egg and chick dry, the sticky egg shell parts will fall off. I had one chick last spring who wore his egg hat for about two days, but it eventually fell off to reveal his top hat (mottled houdan--a real cutie!). I've had chicks step out of the shell and boss other chicks around. I've had others that pipped and then rested four or five hours, zipped, and then rested four or five hours, and then flomped out of the shell and slept for a day before joining the rest of the peepers. Babies need a lot of sleep. Being born is hard work.

Thanks.. you have just made me feel better.. It is laying and yelling very loudly but not getting up at all. It will lays all splayed out for a bit without a sound them, flop around and scream at me. Is the umbilicus normal to be hanging behind it?

here is my poor pitiful little thing...

Paper towels and newspaper, especially, can be slick for little feet and toes. Some people use the rubberized shelf paper inside incubators. I usually just leave the wire exposed. They get a lot of traction if they can hook their little toes into the holes in the incubator screen floor. In your brooder, make sure you have something that affords traction. I like pine wood chips. Don't use cedar, though, as I've read that it can be fatal if chicks eat little bits of cedar wood chips.

Your chick looks like he's drying out nicely. Maybe tomorrow he'll be walking around, investigating your sponge and thermometer.

I'm guessing my eggs are doing well at this point. Neither one has any light space in it when I candle. They're taking up the whole egg. so... just a few days more till I get to hear them pipping maybe???
